what happened to wordpress.com homepage’s tag cloud

If you log out of wordpress, clear your browser cookie, restart your browser and then go to the wordpress main page (like you are coming here for the first time), there is a “Sign up now” get a blog link that cannot be missed – it is huge and orange and at top right under a headline saying “Express yourself. Start a blog.”
For people that already have a blog here, there is a “register another blog” link right in your dashboard at “my blogs” – something that a good number of people have requested in these forums.

Apparently, if you already have a user ID, that button does not appear. That’s the problem.

I mean, if you have a User ID but no blog. There’s no direct link to where you sign up a new one. That needs to be fixed.

That button I described is for NEW people. If you are signed in, either go to your blog and to “my blogs” or if you are at the main wordpress page, or any other wordpress page, click on “my account” in the grey admin bar and select “my blogs.” There is a link there to get another blog.

It’s not under “my blogs” if you don’t already have a blog. That’s the problem. Someone reported it a couple of days ago in another thread. He eventually found a way in, but it wasn’t any of the straightforward things it should have been.

Seriously. There’s a link to a survey right on the home page where you can tell us what you think should go on the home page. Design staff are actually reading those suggestions and making changes as we speak.

You beat me to this tellyworth. I was going to say the same thing. In fact the other day I suggested, under one of my sign in names, that WP put the tags back on the homepage.

Come on, Telly. I filled out the survey. I’m just passing on info so other people can do just what I want them to do, which is fill out the survey the same way.

Getting a response to not say anything here but to put it somewhere else (a survey) is another glaring issue. People don’t like the home page period. It is not that difficult. It is like some WP people took a pill that they are either trying to destroy the concept or else can’t see it any more. If someone was running a personal blog and got this many complaints, a reasonable person would make the changes back to what works.
I posted a few days ago that the tag search bar that used to show while tags were searched, is now gone and is nowhere to be found. Oh sure, I can hunt around and find a search elsewhere after jumping through a few hoops, and there is one on my blog, though it’s not the same and no one can make as good of a search from it.
Why not just make everything easy – the way that it should be – easy, and give people what they want and are asking for.

John, the tag thingie appears to be back in place now…at least on the search I did 5 sec ago.
As to the front page, I’ve left my feedback and I’m waiting for what wp.com comes up with…

Husdal, clicking a keyword under a post (category or tag), for example “conservation” goes to a page like this with recent blogs with the “conservation” key word. There used to be a search bar right in the middle at the top, which I delighted in using for searching more keywords. Now there is none.

Duh…come on John, the seach bar is still there. It has only moved to the top of the page. I wouldn’t consider THAT a big thing, but I understand your POV. Change isn’t always for the better.

@tellyworth-someone is listening. There’s a survey. Or is this a chicken/egg kind of thing?
I’m assuming that the survey is for what the page will look like for once you’re already signed in to WordPress.com. If so, that still doesn’t solve the current navigation problem (and it is a problem) for first-time or casual visitors. See my post above.

If there’s one thing about the old homepage that should be put back it’s the clear delineation between featured blogs by the biggies – CNN etc – and the rest of us. Left-hand column for the huge blogs, right-hand column for normal bloggers kept it clear. Right now it’s back to the mish-mash it was before.

Husdal, when I put “live-foods” in that search bar it gives me a listing like this with a search bar at the top”>. This used to show when clicking keywords from the blog. Now it doesn’t.
Can you image if google had a teeny little search bar up in the right hand corner, do you think so many people would use it then – most certainly not. I like it with the search bar right in the middle of the page.
The related tags box for “conservation” shows only 10 tags, one of them being “News.” Come on, “News”, is related to conservation, how? Another related tag is “accountability.” But clicking “all” takes me to the “hot topics” tags page where “News” is the #1 item on the page. This is the thing – I see no reason for a “hot topics page” as that is strickly sales and has zero to do with my interests, and probably zero to do with anyone else’s personal interests. If anything, I would like to see a page, or at least a more relevant listing of tags related to “conservation”, or “live-foods”, and other things of MY interest. I don’t care about and don’t want to see a “news” tag anywhere on anything that I’m looking for. However, the “hot topics” tag page is more useful than the current WP home page. I did fill out the survey, which didn’t ask me much really. I feel a discussion of the topic is more useful than a survey.

John, I C what you mean.
I didn’t notice that particular search bar was not there when you clicked the tags/categories from a blog, but there when you typed directly into the search bar. Frankly, I don’t recall it being there before. Anyway, from a logical point of view, why is that wrong? When you click the tags/categories you are not ‘searching’, you are looking for related blogs on wordpress.com, which is what you are getting. When you use the search bar, you are indeed searchin, which is why it is hand to have a search bar with your search results so you can make more searches. OK, maybe just semantics from my POV, but that is how i read why the 2nd search bar is not there when you click the global tags/categories.
As to the tags themselves, well, I agree that they don’t always match very well, but they’re autogenerated, and I’m wordpress.com has some fancy search algorithm behind that. And although you may consider it unrelated, other people may very well do consider them related and do want to explore them. What is related depends very much on your own POV.

http://en.wordpress.com/tag/conservation/My concern about the WP home page is that it is looking more like a News front page than a Blogging home page. Historically, WP has been all about Blogging, open source and open to input from everyone. I certainly hope that will remain the case, and that this is not a major change in direction for WP.
