What Happens if I Cancel a paid plan if I’m using a premium theme?
-
I would like to use a premium theme for my daily blog as I hike the Camino de Santiago next month. So I have a few questions:
- In 2018, I did my first Camino and just bought a premium theme while still on the free plan. Is this still possible??? jjscamino.wordpress.com
- I already have a good “wordpress.com” domain – so I don’t need a custom domain. Is it possible to keep my “wordpress.com” domain with a paid plan?
- What happens if I don’t renew my plan (I will be using a premium theme)?
Thanks for your help!!!

Hi there!
Premium themes are not available as separate purchases. They are included with WordPress.com plans (different themes require different plans). You can learn more about it here:
The WordPress.com collection of beautiful and amazing themes continues to grow with the addition of Premium Themes, featuring intricate designs, exciting options for customization, and dedicated support. This feature is available on sites with our WordPress.com Starter, Explorer, Creator and Entrepreneur plans. If your site has one of our legacy plans, it is available on the Pro plan. The exception to this is the sites where a premium theme was already purchased separately. So, on one of your sites, you have the premium theme, Maisha. It will continue to work regardless of the plan connected to that site.
For any other site, you’ll need a paid plan to use premium themes. Some themes are included with the Starter plan, while others require the Explorer plan or higher. You can open the desired theme on the WordPress.com theme gallery to see which plan requires it.
If you cancel a paid plan while a premium theme is active, the theme will change to a default free theme.
Also, it is possible to keep using a WordPress.com site address with a paid plan.
Hope that helps! Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.
