Yes. If you cancel your domain mapping, or if you decide not to renew your domain mapping, your WordPress.com site will remain online and default to http://yourblogname.wordpress.com

Hello,
example.wordpress.com is your default blog address. If you are not wanting this, you can either upgrade to create your own domain. You can find more information on creating a new domain here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/.
If you have already registered a new domain that you no longer want, you can cancel that domain and default back to your wordpress.com address.
If you decide to cancel your domain, know that unless it is within 48hrs of when you created the domain, you will not get a refund.Let me know if this has helped or if you need more information on something else please let me know.

You have it correct Tess – as long as the blogger makes a few posts to tell search engines there is a new address, the reverted site should start searching again in a few weeks – all the old search links will go to the old mapped domain name and it takes a bit of time to train search engines
