What happens if I don't renew my domain mapping?

  • Unknown's avatar

Next month my two blogs are due for domain mapping renewals. I need more specific guidance to know if I need to renew them or not. There not automatically set to renew. I already read help pages some numerous times (I’m forgetful and neurologically disabled) on the differences between wordpress.gov verse wordpress.com. I also read what happens if you don’t renew in time your domain mapping which seams like it could be a big headache and something I may not be able to afford. I’m poor. I do have both blogs hosted buy a separate non wp website host. Which is also who I purchased the domains from. 1 of them I use 1 plugin I believe it’s called on it. It helps me spam hundreds of comments. I asked my host some of the below questions but in a different way, and they couldn’t satisfactorily answer them. So I hope you will.

I access my wp dashboard sometimes from my non wp host account.

I also, have two sub domains of my wp blogs -that this other host supports. I’m only stating this so if the lack of domain mapping will effect them. I want you to tell me. I don’t think they will. But, I’d rather be safe buy asking. Then quite and regret not mapping there head domains if infact they will be effected. So will they?

If I don’t renew my domain mapping answer the following please

    1. Will I get to still put links in my posts?
    2. Will I still have the same dashboard access to my blogs?
    3. I don’t have a computer- Does that make transferring to wordpress.gov difficult or impossible (Something I’m assuming will have to happen if I don’t renew. Right?) I have a chromebook, and a tablet only. If yes, does this mean I have to pay for domain mapping? I’m no website computer expert. Or WP expert.
    4. I use 2 paid themes on my wp.com blogs can they stay on them if I change to wordpress.org?
    5. Can I still use the utube videos inserted into my posts on the .gov blogs?

    6. I will loose any comments on the blogs if I don’t renew. Right?

If I keep domain mapping and eventually want to link to any paid product I’d get commissions for endorsing.Like an amazon product let’s say. Should I then be on wp.gov ? Or not a blog?

    1. Will I get the entire commission?
    2. If not, am I even allowed to do this?
    3. If I am, any wp rules that I must follow to do this? If so, where are they stated?

I’ve viewed the pages shown below. However, since I (unlike it seams most of your .com Bloggers) have a second host I paid the domains for. My blogs won’t go to the default address. True? If yes, does that then gives me the right to keep the other.com benefits?

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

My other current host for these blogs does limited backups of my blog and doesn’t automatically update it. But, it includes excellent security and uptime.

I need guidance in deciding if I truly need my blogs mapped or
not . These answers should tell me either way. These questions are for these blogs. If neither or one of these blogs are the ones that need domain mapping. Please tell me that. Then that one or both. Won’t be renewed.

Thank you for helping me. And if someone could e-mail me directly my answers that be fabulous. I just don’t want to announce my e-mail to everyone.

I have flagged this for staff attention – they can see what your account has for upgrades

However either one of those sites seems to have domain mapping and are not hosted here – so when the name goes away you site and all the content is lost

one option you have is to transfer the contents here and domain map your names to a blog here (Export then import) – $13.-/yr per name – plus the domain registration fee

if you give up the custom domain names you can move here for no cost – but you can’t sell your own ads here or do Adsense etc. very limited affiliate text links – no display picture links

    hope this helps a bit

I’m not sure I understand you. The here you mention is wordpress.com yes? And like we know. There currently mapped. So why would I need to export or import ? That makes no sense.
I read only .gov or.org wordpress sites (The free one) need other hosts. But, I wanted nicer themes that I couldn’t use when I started blogging on the free wordpress websites/blogs. I also wanted to put in links in some of my posts. Not to sell things but, to share free things with my readers which meant I had to map it.
I know since then wordpress.com has grown allot. Have these rules changed?
So your saying having the separate host doesn’t protect the content on my current 2 mapped paid domains. Right?

Either way I hope a staff reply to me soon.
Thanks for tagging this for me.

    I had some typo’s above

    http://www.disabilityadvocate1.com/
    http://sensorysolutions1.com/

Are not hosted on WordPress.COM and don’t seem to have domain mapping – so when the registration expires the name will be lost and the site not reachable – the content will go away when the hosting is not paid

I don’t know about Site Ground – they seem to be your host – they should be able to tell you what happens when you stop paying

  • Hi there,

Both disabilityadvocate1.com and sensorysolutions1.com are mapped to sensorysolutions1.wordpress.com and blog.disabilityadvocate1.com respectively, but neither are set as primary domains for the blogs.

As @auxclass mentioned, although they are mapped here at WordPress.com, the domains are registered somewhere else. sensorysolutions1.com is hosted with siteground: http://www.whoishostingthis.com/?q=sensorysolutions1.com, and from what I can tell, disabilityadvocate1.com is not even registered at the moment. Although you have domain mapping right now, it is not being utilized for either domain.

Are you hosting content outside of WordPress.com for both of these domains to point to or are you wanting them to point to your two WordPress.com blogs?

If the goal is to use them for your two WordPress.com blogs, you will need to update your DNS settings or nameservers at your other host to point the domains to your WP.com blogs. Also, you will need mapping for the domains.

If there is content hosted somewhere else, you will not need mapping. You just need to re-register your domains at your current host along with the hosting so that your content is reachable through your domains. If you are trying to redirect traffic from your WordPress.com blog over to a self hosted WordPress.org blog, you will need a site redirect subscription instead.

Hopefully this all made sense. What I need to know most of all is what you are wanting to do with your custom domains. Then, I’d be able to better help you and answer all of your questions.

    Let me know.

    Thanks!

Thank You! So, nothing will change then AT ALL if I don’t domain map and only pay siteground fees? I’m just double checking I understand correctly. I don’t want them to go to wp .gov, a wp URL address, or any other changes after the domain mapping expires that I didn’t approve of first. disabilityadvocate1.com and sensorysolutions1.com are both hosted and registered at siteground. I purchased a shared hosting account for them both. When I first created the first one sensorysolutions1.com I was with a different host then siteground (Not Siteground or WP) and was new to WP and wanted/needed personalized e-mail support and some of that was needed buy you guys. As well as things were different then on WP in many ways so, I felt I needed both. WP was less developed then.
But, from what you said. I don’t need domain mapping which is GREAT!
If that’s the case. Thank You! Take care.

  • Thank You! So, nothing will change then AT ALL if I don’t domain map and only pay siteground fees?

Correct. In regards to your blogs at WordPress.com, nothing at all will change.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks!
