What happens to blog content when a domain upgraded to www.blogname.com expires?
-
I decided I no longer wanted to pay to annually upgrade my blog so that it was available at http://www.blogname.com. I thought that in that situation, it would default to its original state, i.e. http://www.blognamedotcom.wordpress.com. This is not what has occurred. Instead, my content is obscured by a page demanding renewal and a late fee, and, in a later prompt, a statement that the domain will no longer be there. I’m willing to let the paid domain go, but would like to return my blog to its original state. If this is not possible, I would like to rescue my content before sending it all into outer darkness.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your content is safe on lenserydotcom.wordpress.com and nothing will be deleted – once the domain mapping and Primary Domain name are reset then the Robot telling you about the expired domain name will go away.
There will be some issues I think with incoming links as your friends might have bookmarked lensery.com. and that will no longer work so they and search engines will need a bit of training for a few months
Nice Pictures by the way, nice touch

Hello,
According to the documentation:
At WordPress.com, every site has a default web address that ends in wordpress.com (like yourgroovydomain.wordpress.com). If you register a custom domain for your site, both the original address ending in wordpress.com (yourgroovydomain.wordpress.com) and the new domain (yourgroovydomain.com) will take visitors to your site (although once they are at your site, they will only see the new domain (yourgroovydomain.com) in their browser address bar). If your domain expires, your site with all your content will still be there at the original site address (ie, yourgroovydomain.wordpress.com).
So, your content should still be available in the original wordpress.com URL when the domain name is gone. I’m not quite sure what to do with the renewal page that obscures the content, though, as I haven’t seen it before. Does it prevent you to make a new post/do any administrative tasks on your site?

To undo the Robot – try
Dashboard >> Store >> Domains >> Set Primary back to lenserydotcom.wordpress.com
Dashboard >> Store >> My Upgrades >> Cancel domain Mapping
If you want to keep people from seeing your blog – set it to Private and the content will be safe until you want to start blogging again
Dashboard >> Settings >> Reading >> Visible to only those I invite – Remember to save changes
In case you need more help, I have flagged this for staff attention – they are however a bit backed up

Many thanks for the helpful comments, and for the kind words about the pictures on Lensery. I’ve cancelled the domain upgrades and everything appears to have defaulted painlessly to its original free blog url. It was fun saying “no” to the robot demanding ransom! I’ll make some new bookmarks, and that should fix it!

Alas, I spoke too quickly. Now, when I try to access the site, I see a page saying it does not exist. This has occurred on all three blogs for which I cancelled domain names: Lensery, Scrippage, and Nearing Extinction. I can access all three in the dasboard, and see content there, but any attempt to visit the sites produces the “does not exist” page. Also, if I try from a browser ( using http://www.lenserydotcom.wordpress.com), the same thing occurs. I seem to have committed triple blogicide.

Take a deep breath, walk around the block or go down to your favorite Latte place and have a cookie or two and your favorite beverage! yes I am serious. :)
Your site loads fine for me, it can take a while for caches to be updated both at WordPress.COM and across the internet. For new domain mapping that can take 24 to 72 hours for changes to reach the far corners of the internet, access during that time access can be erratic.
Try clearing your browser cache & forcing a page reload

Great plan!
I did think to clear the cache on the laptop, but to no avail. Oddly, two of three sites now load find from new bookmarks on the tablet, but are for the moment lost to the laptop.
No problem. I have watched those monks erasing their sand paintings…..
Waiting is good. So is latte.
Thanks so much.
