What happens to followers after I deleted my blog?

I made a huge mistake by deleting my old blog (cassiebehle.wordpress.com) upon changing my name. I know I’ll never be able to get that URL back, but what I’m wondering is what happens to my followers. Even though I changed my URL, my dashboard still says I have thousands of followers. Do they automatically get linked to my new URL within their readers page, or are they actually no longer following my new URL because of broken links? Is there anything I can do to message them all if they are no longer following my new blogging site?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Did you change your URL using the Change Your Address procedure, or did you just delete teh old blog and start a new one?

Staff maintain that if you do the former, blog followers are automatically switched to the new URL, but anecdotal evidence indicates that isn’t the case. Please answer those questions in the first paragraph so we can sort this out.

I must have used the Change Your Address procedure because I still have all my old posts, stats, comments, and blogs listed that I, myself, follow. And, on my dashboard, it shows I have more than a thousand followers. I’m just not seeing the readership that reflects that many people following, so I wonder if they are still linked to the URL and website that no longer exists. Kinda fear I’m going to have to start from scratch regarding my following, which is unfortunate based on relationships previously built.

When you change a URL, you drop back to ZERO search engine ranking and you start all over from nothing. It may be that which is causing your drop in readership, but I’ll flag this for staff attention to confirm your followers got moved.

I really appreciate that; thank you. If there’s a way to bypass starting from scratch, that would be super. Otherwise, I suppose I’ll live. Thanks!

I see the following follower numbers for cassierief.wordpress.com:
    WordPress.com Followers (2,721) | Email-only Followers (16) | Pending (29)

Are your followers not finding your new blog in the WordPress.com Reader or not receiving email notifications?

I don’t think they’re finding my new blog. Perhaps it IS a Reader issue; I’m not sure. Maybe it’s not linked appropriately? I tried the “add new” tab within the dashboard this morning to try to add those who used to frequent my blog the most, and I was able to add back a few I had lost.

It would be helpful if you could find out from your followers what is happening, as right now there’s nothing concrete I can act upon.

If people listed in your followers list aren’t seeing your posts in their Reader, or receiving notification emails, I’d need to know usernames/email addresses and what problem it is that they’re experiencing, and I can go from there. If you prefer, you can contact me via email with those details (put my name in the subject line so I will find it).

Have any particular useful way I could go about finding that out from them? I really don’t want to be intrusive.

If your followers contact you, please let me know, as I would need to have specifics on users who are not receiving notifications before I can look into it further.

I think I may have figured out what the problem is. I thought at first it was just my new computer’s settings preventing me from accessing my site, but others are having the same trouble. We are able to get to cassierief.wordpress.com with no problem, but once there, the only thing visible is the header at the top (Cassie (Behle) Rief: Redefining Life’s Perceptions).

The main content isn’t available – the page is blank, with a red X in the left hand corner resembling some kind of error in loading the rest of the page.

It looks like there’s a broken header image on your site. You can fix it by removing the image, or uploading a new one, here: https://cassierief.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=custom-header

Let me know if doing that resolves your issue with viewing the page or not.

That seems to have done it! Whew. Thanks so much for your help!
