What happens to my deleted blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I had another blog here with approximately 200 blog entries with pictures, but I deleted the blog about a month ago.

    I don’t want the old blog back, but I want to know what happens to a blog once it gets deleted. Does WordPress keep my blog FOREVER (like Google does with all my search data….!!!) or do they get rid of it completely (i.e. deleted from their servers/backup copies, etc.)?

  • Sorry, it’s gone.

    Gone forever from your servers and backup copies as well?

    Hello??? Please answer my question!

    They probably just wipe everything. Don’t quote me on that, I don’t actually know any more about it than you do; but people have asked before for deleted blogs to be restored and told it’s not possible, even though everything is supposedly backed up.

    Be patient for an answer beforesunset: the only people who can tell you for sure are the people who create the software. Thankfully, they are quite busy making it better.

  • When you delete your blog, it says:

    “We can never restore your account or your content.”

    It then sends you an email repeating that, and asking you if you’re really really really sure. Once it’s gone it’s pretty much gone, I’m sorry. We don’t do restores.

    Waiting two days before re-asking seems patient enough to me. I’ve seen people bump threads after less than an hour.

    I think what the OP is saying is that they do _NOT_ want thier blog back, but they want to know if you (WP) keep the information on your servers or if the information gets totally whiped from your systems…you back up systems too.

    Again I don’t think the OP wants you to restore their blog. They want to know if the blog gets deleted totally from your systems and back up systems.

    You have? Could have sworn I delete all of those bumps when I or someone else has answered the question.

    I agree wank & it wasn’t intended as a complaint. What I meant was that this particular question needs behind-the-scenes knowledge – so the wait would probably be longer than normal.

    Since we’re on the subject – are there any plans to add a “Bump” ability to nudge posts that are unanswered without writing a further message?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I wouldn’t imagine so, since forcing people to write the extra message discourages them from bumping threads unnecessarily.

    Re the OP’s original question: my feeling would be that partial contents at least may live in server backups for a while. That’s just how it works.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Friendly reminder that there is *0* reason to be bumping around here with the number of people helping out. :)

    Also Matt and staff has stated that BBPress is meant to be as simple as possible. That’s why we don’t have things like avatars, sigs, etc.

    I kind of like it….

    :)

    That’s my feeling too, but the admins have made it pretty clear that they’re not going to bother looking for it, so it may as well be gone forever. Plus we don’t know how often backups are done, how many locations they reside in, and how frequently old ones get overwritten… actually, we don’t know anything about their backup arrangements, which is why I make damn sure to make my own :)

    NOTE to admin types: WP.org forum has a feature located just under the tags section that shows, with links this:
    “Views
    * no-replies
    * untagged
    * unresolved

    If you click “no-replies” for ecample, it returns all posts that have not been answered.

    It’s what I would call a simple solution to a simple problem.

    Hey marc:

    Page all the way down to the bottom of the main .com forum index page…. same stuff there.

    If my original post was read CORRECTLY in the first place (and anwered properly), I wouldn’t have reposted asking for another answer.

    As “croknitchet” has said above, I do NOT want my blog back. I just wanted to know if my blog entries and pictures will remain in wordpress’ servers/backup copies, etc, because I do NOT want them to keep such copies. It appears that I still don’t have an answer regarding this matter.

    As per what “matt” said above: “We can never restore your account or your content.” <- that is not true because I’ve had my blog restored (not this current one). (Please, never say “never”.) So, I guess, they DO keep backup copies somewhere.

    Now, how long are these backup copies stored and when will they be deleted? Please answer me. This “We can never restore account or your content.” does not answer my original question.

    As pointed out in my last response — we do not know how frequently backups are made, or (more importantly to you) how often they are overwritten.

    If you are genuinely concerned that your content is still archived on the wordpress servers you need to contact Automattic direct and ask them what their procedures are. They may have reasons for not wishing to discuss these issues in a public thread.
