What happens to original photos in my library when I resize them?

I am running out of space and cannot afford an upgrade. I tried resizing some of my photos, but now I have less space than I started with!

    Help please?

I’m afraid that’s what resizing does. It keeps the original and makes a reduced-size copy. There is no way to delete the original and keep the reduced size image. The only way to recoup the space is to delete the image and upload a reduced-size copy, remembering of course that if you’ve already used the picture in a post, then it will need re-inserting.

I got hit by the same feature and the only practical solution was to pay for a space upgrade.

BTW some might suggest starting another blog- just for pictures – then linking to them from your posts. This works (or you could use photobucket), but you miss out on the benefits of uploading to your blogs media library (e,g. Photos in galleries)

  • Yep. You must resize your images before uploading them: https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/ Check what’s the widest image your theme can display, and make sure images you upload are not much bigger than that. You can also use http://www.jpegmini.com/ to reduce the filesize of JPEGs without decreasing the actual size with no noticeable loss in image quality.

Replacing existing photos is a drag – I’ve done it – but it’s the only way to free up space without buying the upgrade. If you click an image in the post editor to edit the image there, there should be a “Replace Image” button. You can use that to replace the bigger image with a smaller one, and then go to the media library afterwards to delete the larger image which then shouldn’t be attached to a post anymore.

You also can’t insert featured images this way.

Well, that’s another thing that the BSOD editor cannot do.

  • I wouldn’t know. I don’t even try to use it (and with penguin’s user script I don’t have to ;-) )
