What happens to subscribers if I purchase a domain?
-
I can see volunteers thinking “didn’t she search”? Yes I did! I searched in all the usual and some not so usualy places but I couldn’t find the answers!
What happens to subscribers if at this stage I buy a domain through WP? Do they stay subscribed to the primary site xxx.wordpress.com sub-domain?
Or is the domain name really only seen by readers and when I am in the dashboard, I’m really still on teamoyeniy.wordpress.com?
There must be something around that explains all this, I just can’t find it!
I realise any Alexa/Quantcast ranking will have to start from scratch and I assume I’ll need to change SiteMeter too? Please confirm.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Nothing as long as you stay at wordpress.com. If you were to switch to self-hosting then all those subscribers get left behind. You can export the list in a CSV file, but I know of nowhere that you can import it.
This is one reason I always stick with a third-party email subscription service such as Feedburner. No matter where I go, all I have to do is burn a new feed and none of my subscribers are any the wiser. Of course if the g00g should happen to kill feedburner (there is plenty of history with the g00g killing things) I’m out of luck.

Thanks TSP – is thre somewhere you know of I can read the finer details of what happens to each aspect of a blog?
I’d be staying with WP and buying from WP.

I mean, there are the web master registrations – do they remain untouched?
Which URL does Google look for?
Etc etc etc………..
-
The webmaster stuff at Bing, Yahoo and Google should be fine since they are tied to the domain name. You would have to reverify them by putting the code into the index.php file, or by going the HTML file route and uploading it to the public_html root of the new hosting account.
-
I should add though that the above only applies to going from here to self-hosted. As far as buying a domain name and mapping it to the site here, there won’t be any changes you will have to make to the webmaster stuff. All that will still work just fine.

But shouldn’t I want the root domain to be the main URL registered at Google and Bing?
I’ve bought the domain, by the way, I just haven’t made it the main one yet on the Dashboard.
As far as I can tell, this is like moving a site. I just don’t know how much of it WordPress does (like the 301 Redirect etc) and how much we, the blogger has to do!
Would you believe Google Webmaster just told me their Help wasn’t available in my language? I only speak English………..
-
You can change it if you wish, but being that the domain mapping is a 301 redirect (permanent) its not a major thing.

TSP, thanks for all your help, but I think I am just confusing myself more!
I think I’ll mark this thread as resolved.
