What happens to the wordpress.com domain name if I go to a custom domain name?

I’m thinking of upgrading to a custom domain name that I already own, but the current xxx.wordpress.com domain is well-enough known that I hate to lose it. If I switch our wordpress.com hosted blog to the custom domain name, will we still be reachable via the old address, at least until people learn the new address? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi @krakowian,
Yes, you can still reach your site with your xxxx.wordpress.com sub-domain.

When you register a custom domain like example.com for your site, you have to set it as a primary domain so that even if someone comes to your site from xxxx.wordpress.com sub-domain, they will be redirected to your custom domain(example.com) and hence, they will always see this custom domain in the browser’s address bar.

Read more about setting a primary domain here:

    Hope this helps :)
