Every time I try and choose a different font for my pages and posts I get a message stating ‘Your changes include customized styles that will only be visible once you upgrade to a Premium plan’. The same seems to be true of making simple background color changes too – have these core function been removed from the free accounts?

Those functions were never available on the free wordpress.com plan. You are probably confusing with the self-hosted wordpress.org.

Yes they were, they were referred to as ‘heading’ and ‘base’ fonts (screengrabs from a few months ago below). I’ve been using them for years with wordpress.com (I’ve never used wordpress.org) and have never had a paid account. Under customise > fonts there was a choice of at least 12 fonts to choose from.

It seems that there are now some (but not all thankfully) themes which don’t allow for any variation of font choice unless an upgrade is purchased. I haven’t seen this on wordpress.com before, perhaps a recent monetising decision. I will bare this in mind when choosing my themes going forward :-)

To find those themes which still allow you to select from a range of fonts without an upgrade, I *think* you have to search for themes which include ‘editor-fonts’:
