What has happened to the classic editor?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m using the classic editor. Suddenly, all the editing buttons for bold, italics, blockquote, etc. have vanished. Is it something I’ve done, or is it something you’re doing to “improve” things? Also, those editing buttons are gone from the comments page, so I can’t easily fix a reader’s botched-up comment.

There are other weird things. In the stats page and also the comments page, it’s no longer possible to expand the icons in the left margin to find some feature I’m looking for. In the past, I’ve complained because the marginal menu was always expanded. Now it’s always contracted.

One more thing: In the comments page, the little bell icon at the top no longer gives a list of recent comments. Why has that feature been removed?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @sensuouscurmudgeon, I’m fairly sure they’re leaving the classic editor plugin alone right now unless there’s a vulnerability that needs to be fixed. I’m unaware of any recent changes.

I checked your account though and did notice you’re not using wp-admin style navigation, though. If you want to change that, here’s how:
    https://wordpress.com/support/dashboard/

Most folks who prefer the classic editor like using the wp-admin option there.

If (as it seems) you’re using the classic editor block within the block editor, just click on the section and the editor buttons should appear.

Let us know if you need more help!

Hi, supernovia. Thanks for responding. I’m not using the classic editor plugin or the “classic editor block within the block editor.” I’m still using the old classic editor which is still available from the “Add New” menu at the top of the list of posts.

Everything has been working fine and I haven’t changed anything. Then, a day or so ago, all the problems I mentioned have begun. So I suspect that whatever happened is something at your end of things, not mine.

I can’t be the only blogger who has noticed this. Can you please find out how things can be restored to the way they were a day or so ago?

I posted again today and the same problems exist — no editing buttons, etc. Is this what we can expect now from the Classic editor?

  • Hi there,

As you can see from the screenshot below I can see the toolbar on the classic editor.

Since this is working on my end I recommend clearing your browser’s cache and see if this fixed this and all the other problems that you mentioned. Here’s how to do it:

Thank you, fstat. I cleared the cache, but it hasn’t made any difference. There’s still no editing toolbar for my blog — although there is here in the support forum. I may have to live with this situation. It’s still better than the block editor.

  • although there is here in the support forum

The forum editor is completely different than the classic editor.

I suggest trying a different browser. Maybe there’s something wrong with your current browser’s configurations that is affecting that toolbar.
