Scroll down to “Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels)” and know that exact image dimensions are required or a featured image will not display. -
It’s a little tricky as each theme uses featured images differently. Here’s more about them in general: http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/
Here’s more info about your theme, including how it uses featured images: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/
Hope that helps!

I am now using twentyten and I still don’t understand because when I nominated a photo for a featured image, nothing occurred as a result. Maybe my theme doesn’t use them … then why even note them?

The twenty ten theme does use featured images–they replace the header image on the page where you set them. If they aren’t showing up, you may need to make sure they are the right size and shape to fit in the header. Your theme info page will tell you more about the size images need to be to display correctly in the header: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyten/
