what is a host? why is it needed?

I don’t understand a host and the need for it. What is it? What does it do? Does every site/blog need a host?

Since you have a blog here at wordpress.com, wordpress.com is your host. What they do is give you the space required to run (in this case) your blog. It is the physical computer that hosts your website or blog. Some people hire other webhosts (since wp.com is free) if they have more advanced needs or control.

Ok… but why do I need to buy a host for wordpress.org?

That site just gives you the physical software. You require a host to give you space on their computer to put the software onto it, install it, customize it, etc. The ease of wordpress.com is getting a blog without all the hassle of downloading software, getting a host, uploading software, customizing it, getting a domain name, etc. etc…..

Ahh ok I get it. Thank you.

Once I get a host it helps me set up a site and enable a downloaded theme easily without any hassle?

Not completely without hassle. Before you do anything to crazy, maybe read up on the documentation on getting setup with the download from wordpress.org at:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Getting_Started_with_WordPress

That should get you started on learning the process. We only support the blogs hosted here at wordpress.com so really anymore questions on this would have to be taken up over at the other support forums:

There are also web hosting services that use an autoinstaller program to set up software (including WP) on a privately purchased domain hosted with them. But since this isn’t the scope of the WP.com forum, and as Trent pointed out, you should be asking over at WP.org.

Honestly though, if you don’t really need the complexity and headache of running your own domain and the software that runs on it, I wouldn’t bother looking any further than WPcom.
