What is a SKIN?
-
Ok, I’ve been search and Googling…..and I just want to know a few things.
#1 – what is a skin? I have found some I like but I don’t know the difference between a “skin” and a “Theme”.#2 – I have a wp.com blog and there is not a single theme I like. I have found a few ‘skins’ I like, but I don’t know if I can use them in wp.com. If it’s a matter of upgrading to ‘custom CSS’ and installing the skin via Sandbox, I’m all over it. *fingers crossed*
#3 – aside from posting in the ‘new themes’ thread (which I’ve done) what else can I do to beg for more theme options?

Themes determine functionality; skins determine appearance.
Try using the free CSS Preview feature to see if you can get the skin you want to work.
Nothing you can do about the range of themes available. Try to remember that WP.com are offering you an entirely free service. If you don’t like what they have to offer, go elsewhere. But they are under no obligation to you, or anyone, to add more themes or do anything else.

Hi Habitual,
some themes let you mess with colours (I am using Garland with my own specially tasteless colours).
Many of them let you change or add your own images fairly painlessly.
You can make a dull theme into your own glowing skin like that.

Thanks Semper – I will check out Garland. Also, if I do the CSS customized option, I can cut and paste a”skin”, correct?
Ros, that breakdown is exactly what I was trying to understand. Thanks. But I also want to say, I don’t need to “try to remember” that wp.com is FREE. Did ‘ya really need to add that second half of your response? I didn’t realize wp.com has a mission statement of “shut up and like it, it’s free”. It seems to me they want to improve their product, and more theme options or at least theme flexibility wouldn’t kill them.

Habitual, the CSS upgrade and css customization is just something that the wordpress.com staff do not support as it is an upgrade they expect only more advanced users to use. Just a little interesting thing to know before you upgrade to the CSS upgrade ;) It does allow you to change a theme however you want and most use sandbox as the starting point since it is so basis. There are quite a few people that make “custom CSS” for sandbox for wordpress.com, so that might be something else to google as well :)
A skin in my mind is just another term for theme in most cases. It is just another design that is different than another. WordPress.com adds a few themes every couple of months and most of that is through feedback from the users. If you have something in mind, you can always let staff know your opinion and hope they have several others that also want that theme!
While I am sure rosclarke wasn’t trying to be rude, it could have been worded different. I am thinking they were just telling you that themes are rarely added and if you require complete flexibility, some users like to get a host and install the downloadable version of wordpress as you can then add any theme you want!
The best we have here at wordpress.com is the themes we currently have and the CSS upgrade for those that would like some more custimization ability. Well, that and waiting for future theme releases:)
Hope that helps out.

i’d stick with what wordpress.com provides as they are safe and proven. you might not like them but we don’t have very much choice, unless you know css well.
