What is a sub domain?
-
I would like to have WordPress.com hots both my existing web site. (The domain is http://www.reefdelivery.com) and to purchase 2 others through wordpress and host them here.
So I’d have 3 domains http://www.aquaticcreationsnh.com , http://www.wickedawesomefrags.com and http://www.reefdelivery.com
Yahoo hosts and registers our current domain http://www.reefdelivery.com and hosts our e mail.
I don’t understand how sub domains work exactly. Can I only use a sub domain for a blog? Or can I set up aquaticcreationsnh.com as a sort of “landing page” and then have that redirect to http://www.reefdelivery.com? and then http://www.reefdelivery.com would be a sub domain?
Sorry to be a very confused lay person. Hope I explained myself at least fairly well.
Sincerely,
Steph@ACThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Can I only use a sub domain for a blog?
Yes. In an address like “blog.domainname.com” the word “blog” is the subdomain. In an address like “example.domainname.com” the word “example” is the subdomain. However, while “www” is also a subdomain, WordPress.com does not offer the option to use “www” so you could either use addresses like wickedawesomefrags.com on WordPress.com or a subdomain like blog.wickedawesomefrags.com or whatever.wickedawesomefrags.com, but you cannot setup http://www.wickedawesomefrags.com here.
If you setup a CNAME record for whatever subdomain you’d like to use and point that to the WordPress.com servers, then you can map that subdomain to a WordPress.com blog using the domain mapping upgrade.
Or can I set up aquaticcreationsnh.com as a sort of “landing page” and then have that redirect to http://www.reefdelivery.com? and then http://www.reefdelivery.com would be a sub domain?
At WordPress.com, you could use aquaticcreationsnh.com and reefdelivery.com (without the “www”, or some other subdomain like blog.reefdelivery.com). If you set up both domains on the same WordPress.com blog, then you could make one of them the primary domain and the other one would redirect to the primary domain automatically. Now, if you wanted to actually show content on aquaticcreationsnh.com that users had to click on before they reached reefdelivery.com, then those would need to be setup as separate sites.
In any of these cases (subdomain or not) you can still host your email elsewhere as long as you make certain to setup your DNS records properly according to your email provider’s instructions. It would be a good idea to make a note of all the current DNS records (including the ones for email) at this time through your current provider so you have a record of them.

Thank you very much for your help. Both replies gave me the advice I was looking for. I am going to set up our site as design simply suggests here,
“At WordPress.com, you could use aquaticcreationsnh.com and reefdelivery.com (without the “www”, or some other subdomain like blog.reefdelivery.com). If you set up both domains on the same WordPress.com blog, then you could make one of them the primary domain and the other one would redirect to the primary domain automatically.”I don’t need aquaticcreationsnh to show any content, it’s just a domain that is much more relevant to our company than “reefdelivery” but my husband has owned and used “reefdelivery” for so long that I don’t want to confuse our customers that know to look for us at that site. I just want to make it easier for new clients to find us by owning a domain that has relevance to the company name. (It’s more searchable)
I’ll just set up wickedawesomefrags as it’s own entity and then link it to our main site rather than sub host or redirect it.
Thank you very very much. : )
