What is a widget? – and does 'this' have a name?

  WHAT IS A WIDGET?
  Lots of pages about how to use widgets and how good they are, but can anyone tell me what one is, please?

  DOES ‘THIS’ HAVE A NAME? (it might be widget?)
  I am looking for a way to put my previous post-headings on a page, so someone can click on them and it links to there. Without putting the whole damn line-long link in. Can’t work out how to do it – what do I search for to find out?
