What is advertising?

  Sorry to be dense, but I just wanted to clarify a point.

  What exactly is advertising? For example, if I want to promote the Salvation Army on my blog as a charity, but have absolutely no vested interest in doing so – I am not paid by the Salvation Army, and have no income as a restult of posting about them, is that an advert? Likewise organisations like the RLSS or St. John, if I promote them and tell people “go and take a course or join” is that advertising? Or is it only advertising if I am earning money from it?
