What is, and should I pay for Domain Mapping?
-
Hey guys,
I have a simple blog. I set it up as a free WordPress site before I knew anything about purchasing hosting.
Now I’m getting an email from WordPress asking that says this:
“This upgrade replaces your site’s default address of “mysite.wordpress.com” with the custom domain “mysite.com”.Domain Mapping costs $13.00, and it is set to expire tomorrow, on May 22, 2016. If this upgrade expires, your site will no longer be available at “mysite.com”.”
What is Domain Mapping? It sounds like hosting. Should I purchase separate hosting or should I use this Domain Mapping?
I definitely don’t want to lose my site. I’ve had it for 2 years now. I renew the domain at GoDaddy every year but I don’t remember ever having to do anything about Domain Mapping.
Your advice on this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Domain Mapping is the upgrade you would purchase if you wanted to use a domain registered elsewhere (GoDaddy or 1and1 for example) with your WordPress.com site.
So, essentially, it is what allows your site URL to be bruceworkinprogress.com vs bruceworkinprogress.wordpress.com.
If that is worth the $13/yr is something you will have to decide for yourself.

trying to do the domain mapping for $13 but I cant seem to do it. The site keeps wanting to charge me $99 ????

Also on my dashboard I get this message
“Register backyardrancher.me for only $25 per year.”
But when I click on the link it brings me to the page to upgrade to premium for $99….False advertising maybe? -
Domains are no longer available for purchase or mapping individually. They are included with WordPress.com Premium. This change has been made as we work to offer the best combination of value and performance for users while still offering a completely free product for those who do not wish to purchase any upgrades.
A great way to go if you are not interested in WordPress.com Premium is to look into setting up a self-hosted WordPress.org site through a hosting provider such as Bluehost, GoDaddy, or Pressable.

I am sending you an email to the address associated with your WordPress.com account. Please let me know if you do not receive it.
