What is best for our business?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
We currently have a website set up with Wix. I fully manage this site. We have been advised that we need to move to a WordPress site to integrate with another platform we use, so that we can get our customers placing orders for products directly through our website.
We are a food distribution company.

Can you please help me in which plan is best, what the fee’s are involved in bringing over domain hosting and staying with wordpress, how easy (or hard) the actual web page design process is, and if there is any way to entirely transfer the current web design over from Wix.

I look forward to hearing back and getting the process started.

    Thanks,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine,

Wix does not offer any export option currently. So moving to WordPress.com on plans other than Business Plan will require moving the pages manually to the WordPress.com site. Here’s a guide on transferring the content over from Wix to WordPress.com.

For the design you have on Wix, it cannot be transferred over to WordPress.com. But you can install a theme and customize the look of your site once you’ve imported your content over.

And regarding transferring domain hosting, when you purchase any upgraded plan on WordPress.com, you’ll have a free credit to transfer your own domain from another registrar to WordPress.com.

By looking at your requirements to allow your customers placing orders for products directly through your website, you may want to consider upgrading to a Business Plan that allows you to install plugins and have more flexibility in using custom themes. See the features of Business Plan here.

On top of that, if you have a Business Plan upgrade, transferring from Wix to WordPress.com can be assisted using the live RSS feed on your Wix site.

For e-commerce feature, I’m unsure if you already have something planned, you can explore WooCommerce, which is the most commonly used e-commerce plugin on WordPress sites.

Do let us know if you have further questions, we’ll be glad to help. I’m also adding modlook tag to see if staff has better advice on the transfer.

  • Good morning –

Catherine, I’m following up on the Modlook tag. I think that reginabally has outlined things pretty well.

In short, if you need to use an eCommerce plugin you would need to be set up on our business plan. The pricing and features of our plans are here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

You will have access to dedicated support team 24/7 to help you get set up and answer your questions. This is a huge advantage to using WordPress.com over running your own WordPress installation. There are 2 versions of WordPress so it’s important to figure out which one is going work best for you. Here, this is WordPress.com. A managed environment with a dedicated support team. Our sites do not have to pay for additional hosting or storage. Check out more about these differences on this page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Additionally, this is the start up information for both versions. Spend some time reading over that information to help you make the best decision.
