What is Domain Mapping? I got am email my (very old) site would be billed for it

I had a techy friend set up my site 15 years ago. He is not involved with it anymore (& I don’t make major changes bc I don’t know what I am doing…just use it for blog posts), but I got an email saying I would be charged $13 for domain mapping. What is that? Why am I getting charged for it? I don’t think I have seen this charge before. Help.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi! The domain mapping/connection is basically the “attaching the domain name to your site” charge.

Your site here on WordPress.com is otherwise a free site; it doesn’t appear to have any other purchases associated with it, aside from the connection so it can use life-changingwords.com as its address. Without that mapped/connected domain, your site would use this address instead: lifechangingwords.wordpress.com.

No, this has been a paid upgrade for many years. Looking at your account, you took over the domain mapping upgrade for life-changingwords.com in 2020 and have paid for it every year since then. It was put in place originally by your friend back in 2016.

Since we now require a paid plan to be able to use a custom domain as your primary domain, it’s less expensive to keep this domain mapping upgrade that was grandfathered in. Also, it looks like you’ve posted in the past few months, so unless you want to go back to the free lifechangingwords.wordpress.com URL, I’d recommend keeping it for now.

    I hope that clarifies things!
