Spacing issues in posts…who is having them?…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you’re talking about the function of the br code, it seems to have suddenly changed.

So it looks like everyone having this problem?…

    Hi there

I need urgent help? Every time I save any text on my blog, it joins all the text together in one giant paragraph!!!

I dont know whatr to do?

Can someone email me if they are aware of any major problems on word press?

I am unsure how to fix this problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m having problems too. Over an hour ago I was working on a draft and it previewed fine. So just before I could publish my draft post, the whole thing is now messed up! The post formatting is ruined (all text joined together) and I’m getting <span> and <span id=”yui_3_16_0_1_1438998823842_2219″> code tags all over in the test editor. Every time I delete these tags, it keeps coming back. WP please fix this problem!

  • Unknown's avatar

Just to be clear, I use only the classic editor. I use the br code when formatting lists, so the lines don’t run together. Now, suddenly, it adds a blank line between items — even for things I haven’t edited recently. The function of the code seems to have changed — without warning.

I have the same problem. I’ll write a post. It will look great. I’ll go back later to edit and find one big block of unformatted copy. I sent the “happiness engineers” a message. If they get back to me I’ll share what they say.

This is a random thing. It usually happens on the new “improved” (improved means “it sucks”) post editor, but this time it happened with the regular editor (that usually works.)

I forgot to mention that I’m using the classic editor, which is much easier to work with. Thanks Vampiremaman for letting WP know about the problems. I hope they fix things as soon as possible.

If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/

If you use the classic editor here Dashboard > Posts > Add New to create your posts what I provide below may be helpful.

In the classic editor, if you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph. If you are working in the Text or HTML editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines.

Whether or not you are copying and pasting go to > Dashboard > Settings > Writing and enable this setting:
    Formatting
__ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
    “save changes”

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

All well and good for the above, but is anyone working on fixing the bug that’s crept in to the visual editor? I discovered this tonight myself, only after publishing my article. Going in with the classic editor and breaking up the text fixed the situation, but I prefer to work in a visual layout form.

That was me. Beep Beep Boop was bad enough, but now we’re seeing disruptive tinkering with the classic editor.

    Hi there,

I’m very sorry for the disruption with the spacing in the editor. Our team is merging some changes that were made to the core WordPress software that WordPress.com runs on, and one of those changes introduced this bug. Our team launched a fix for it, and if you still see the problem you can refresh the page in your browser or clear your browser’s cache to see that fix.

If the problem persists after that for anyone, please let me know!

  • Unknown's avatar

rachelmcr, I still have the problem. You can see it at my blog by looking at the Table of Contents tab. The items in each category used to be single spaced, but now there’s a blank line between every item.

  • Unknown's avatar

Just noticed this problem on my blog too. I’ve always used
after </div> to create a line break that otherwise doesn’t occur, but now it’s creating 2 breaks (and not using
does the same as before — no break). I’ve tried it in both Firefox and Safari, cleared the caches in each, but the problem persists.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oops, wasn’t thinking — that’s “I’ve always used br after </div>” (etc)

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for letting me know, sensuouscurmudgeon and badblokebob. There was a different change made to the core WordPress software that seems to be creating that extra line break — I’m checking with our team now to get more information about that change, and to see if we can fix that for you.

In the meantime, if you’d like to fix that extra line break right away, there are a couple changes that will work. Instead of ending the lines in the text editor with br tags like this:

    Line 1<br>
    Line 2<br>
    Line 3

You can leave the br tag out entirely and the editor will interpret that as a line break:

    Line 1
    Line 2
    Line 3

Or you can add a slash to the end of the br tag:

    Line 1<br />
    Line 2<br />
    Line 3

I am checking to see if we can fix this so you don’t have to make any changes, but those approaches will work if you want to get those line breaks fixed right away.

rachelmcr: Thank you for the continuing concern.
Of course I immediately thought of removing the “break” codes. It would be simple to search for them and replace them with nothing.

However, back in 2008 when I started that Table of Contents, I found that it was necessary to add the “break” code after each link, in order that the links wouldn’t run together into one huge blob of a paragraph. I’m worried that might happen again. I have several tables of contents under different tabs, organizing thousands of posts. Therefore, if I edited even one of them to remove the “break” codes, it would be an almost impossible task to add them back if it were necessary to do so.

Your suggestion of adding aslash to the end of the br tag is interesting, but because there doesn’t seem to be any advantage to the change that has recently been made, I would much prefer it if you could restore things to the way they’ve always worked. Please keep us advised.
