What is privacy protection and why do I need it?
-
I was signing up for a blog site, and the prompt tells me to purchase privacy protection. It has a link to explain why I need it, but that simply leads to a sales site for your upgrades with no explanation attached. I read your privacy statement and it seems to be sound. So, what is privacy protection and why should I need it?

Privacy protection only applies if you are registering a custom domain. To register a domain you have to provide your address and contact details and anyone can then access it by doing a whois lookup on your domain. The Privacy protection hides that information so it’s not publicly available. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/#public-versus-private
If you only plan on using the free WordPress.com URL you don’t need to worry about that. What you do need to worry about is choosing a secure password for your site and there’s also two-step authentication available if you want it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/security/

For example, I write about cyberwar, hackers, things like that. They recommend I get privacy protection. If you blog about cats and knitting, it’s less fraught.
