Does ransomware pose a threat to a user’s files on WordPress? If so, what is being done to protect against the threats? I realize that ransomware is, at this point, usually delivered as an email attachment, which, if opened, encrypts selected user files and demands payment for them to be restored. The question is — Is WordPress safe from a more general application of this technology which could hijack mega-systems and not just individual personal computers?

Yes, WP.com’s security measures render it immune to this particular threat. Note that ransomers may spoof emails etc to look like they are from WP.com (or the FBI or whoever) and if you fall for that it’s not WP’s fault.

raincoaster — Thank you for your reply. Specifically, what would be identifying characteristics of a “spoof” email as opposed to an actual ransomware email?
-
That’s the kind of thing I normally charge good money to answer, but Google has a lot of info, so root through some search results. The #1 indicator (and it’s an indication that the spoofer is not very good) is if the visible URL is not the same URL as you get when your cursor hovers over the link.

Thanks to auxclass for the very informative link and to raincoaster for suggesting Google, which was what I was doing when I decided to try WordPress Support. Your help is very much appreciated.
