What is s0.wp.com and why does it take so long to connect to it?

  When I blog a new post—or even go to the dashboard—I see in the bottom left corner of my Firefox (most recent version) screen “Waiting for s0.wp.com..” and the wait is a long wait, generally more than a minute by the clock.

  What is this site? and why is the wait for it so deucedly long? And is there a fix so that my blogging is not constantly interrupted by long, long waits?

  I’m running on OS X Yosemite.

  And now I find a similar long wait for s1.wp.com.

  What are these sites, and why are they so unresponsive?

  s2.wp.com, not s1.wp.com (though that also could be bad—just haven’t noticed it)
