What is the best way to copy content from one blog to another?

Well, I’m not sure it is working because when I switch sites it kicks me out of the dashboard, so I can’t copy and paste or write or anything like that. The only thing available is admin settings and stats.
I use the old dashboard for writing and the like because the new dashboard doesn’t work to well for writing on PCs and does not have the tools I need. Everything is narrow (designed for stupid phones) and it is hard to write that way.

How do I switch back and forth between the sites with the old dashboard?

  • Are you able to open each one up in a different browser window? Not just a new tab, but a different window?

No, I tried that first. I can’t open them in different windows because they are under one account/login. When I try to do that, it just brings up the same thing (my current active blog) like a duplicate, I can’t change it.

  • Just to address something you mentioned earlier, when you’re importing into the new site, it should ask what to do about authors from the old blog’s content. That doesn’t mean the site was hacked. So if I were you I’d proceed with the import, then delete the things you don’t want on the new site.

Also, the export file will not contain images. It contains links to them, and the import attempts to pull in those images for you.

I would highly recommend that instead of copying and pasting — that sounds awfully tedious!

If you still want to copy and paste, though, and you’re having trouble opening the site in two tabs, try ctrl+clicking each of these links:

    https://musicmagick.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
    https://musicandmindfulness.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

They’ll look the mostly the same, but they should be different.

Thank you Supernova. Yes, seeing those “other names” as authors threw up red flags for me.

Yes, “tedious” only begins to describe “copy and paste” I have been doing!

I will try export again with the info you cleared up in mind. I will also try your idea of “ctrl+click” on the links if the export proves too hairy for me or is not working like I need.

    Thank you

Actually, I need to put the link to my current blog in place of http://www.musicmajick, which I am not using.
Can you put that link here for me please, it won’t let me do it. It says it is because I am logged in.
Also, do I need to come to the forum when I want to do this every time or is there someplace I can put the links to do that trick outside the forum? I’m thinking going to my browser, putting in the address and saving it in bookmarks for each one. Then I would “ctrl-click” from there?

I still think export/import would be preferable to copy/paste….
Do you mean you need the wp-admin link for itsaboutthemusicblog?? https://itsaboutthemusicblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

Yes, I will give the export/import another try.
Yes, that is the link I need, thank you

Ok, I tried the export/import thing again and it seemed to work like it should. At first I thought something went wrong because everything the imported was showing “published”. Then I remembered that I chose them in my other blog and they were “published”. So my thinking is that if I export/import “drafts” they will come in as “drafts”.

So now I am going to very slowly and methodically keep going with it, but I have bookmarked this thread so I can try the “ctrl-click” thing if it comes to it. Failing that I will need to go back to the extra tedious method.

    Thank you

Yes, I do think the Export/Import thing is going to work for me! I just do sections at a time (I now sort of regret having over 300 articles posted on my current/old site, but sort of don’t either).
Anyway, with numbers like that, even though I am not copying everything over, doing it they way I started would have easily taken 12 months! With the Export/Import, all I have to do is go through imports that show published and change them to Draft for now.
    Much quicker!

Thank you for all the help.

  • I’m glad that’s working for you! And if they come in as published, you can always change them to draft. Or you can make the entire new site private while you work on it. That’s under my site – settings.

    I hope that helps!

Yes, that is exactly what I am doing. That way I can make any changes or adjustments to the articles if needed and I can post them now and again instead of all at once (that would not be good).

Yes, I am absolutely keeping the new site private until it is good and ready for launch. If all the planets align and what have you, I may be ready to launch in another month or two.

  • We will be here if you run in to any other questions :)

    Thank you.
I think we can call this resolved. Sorry, I keep forgetting to to mark the box when everything is fixed.

  • Cheers. And thanks @themagicrobot for sending the right link.
