What is the big, black rectangle called?
-
I changed from Quentin to Quintus and am having appearance issues. How do I fix the top of my blog? What is the big black rectangle on top called? How do I make it go away? How can I make my blog look better? I have been trying to figure out how to change things. Is there a tutorial explaining what controls to go to? I am sooooo clueless how to help myself. Thank you :-)

For the way the theme is designed see here:
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/quintus/The black square goes away if you go to Appearance > Header and set a color to “Text Color” – any color except pure white (ffffff)

It didn’t make the black rectangle go away. Are you sure this is the same issue? The black does not go around the title, but is above it.
I will keep trying….

That big black rectangle is the “header image” area. You can upload a header image by going to appearance > header.
To get rid of it entirely would require the Custom Design upgrade and some CSS modlification. Getting rid of it takes away the site title and tag line, so there are a handful of things that have to be adjusted.

How about they upload an “image” that is just a rectangle of the desired size and color?
-
Yup, they can do that. They could even make a transparent PNG with no background color and then the light grey/ivory color down in the content area would show through.

If you are referring to the whole header area then upload a header and the bi black cox will be gone. What will remain in a smaller black box around your tagline. That is what was discussed in the thread that I linked to. I do not have a custom design upgrade. This is a link to my test blog wearing the Quintus theme and I leave the blog accessible for a short while so you can see the result of what was discussed in the thread I linked to. http://leosquared.wordpress.com/
