What is the difference between a category and a tag?

  My theme came with categories; so I dutifully added them to every post. A friend said I should have done tags instead and we can’t agree on how they are different. They seem the same to me. Help please?

  For all intents and purposes, they are not treated differently by the search engines. They see them as all the same.

  For organizational purposes, categories are like major divisions, while tags are used as subdivisions

  Example: Category: Food with tags carrots, broccoli, cabbage, etc.
