What is the difference between draft, private and pending review status?

– in terms of whether the general public can see the post, where does it appear (if anywhere) on my blog, can people see the post if they have a direct link, etc.

Please note, the relevant help pages say NOTHING about the difference between draft and private.
In fact, neither of these pages even contains both the term “draft” and the term “private”!
