@sosolb the difference between premium and free themes is quite simple.
If you want to have a theme that comes with support by the theme author, you can now buy a premium theme, which has some features that perhaps you will not find on the free themes available on WordPress.com. This can be handy if you do not have CSS skills or do not know how to adapt a free theme to your liking.
You can read about the Premium themes here http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/premium-themes/

If over the long term your intention is to move your blog content into a wordpress.ORG install and self-host then two things come to mind. The first is that if your purchase a premium theme it will only be valid here on the wordpress.com domain. It’s not tranferable and cannot be used on a wordpress.ORG site.
The second is that if you purchase a CSS editing upgrade for your wordpress.com free hosted blog it’s important to know that as wordpress.COM and wordpress.ORG run on different software, if you set up a wordpress.ORG install in the future your CSS will not be transferable. CSS editing is theme specific at wordpress.COM and that means it will have to be redone on that new wordpress.ORG site, as wordpress.COM themes that have the same names as wordpress.COM themes do are different — they are each coded to run on different software.
