What is the difference between Team and Followers in People section?

When looking at site stats, when clicking on Followers it brings me to a ‘People’ section where the email list and wordpress subscribers are listed. Next to that is the list of ‘Team.’ I know many people have asked this question in their heads or on a search engine before, I’m happy that it will be answered here.
What does this ‘Team’ list represent? Are these the employees of WordPress.com?

Team is a list of people who have access to modify the site in some way. In WP Admin, it is called Users instead of Team. See https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
