What is the difference between viewers and followers?

What is the difference between followers and viewers? If my blog is private, do both have to log into wordpress everytime to view an entry? Do both receive email notifications when a new entry is published? I switched from sending updates by email to a wordpress private blog…not sure if it is the best way to approach sharing my stories with a private group

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Followers follow your blog and can change settings so they get email notifications when a new post is up. Viewers are just people who look at your blog… I think. If you’re on private people also have to request access to view or follow your blog.

I’m new here, so sorry if I wasn’t much help. It would also be really great if you could check out my blog at https://annabanannnna.wordpress.com/

Thank you…yes I realised that for a private blog you invite viewers…but I have a number of viewers who have accepted invitations who do not appear on my followers list in my dashboard. Plus, when I tried inviting myself (via an alternate email) I was taken to the admin page of my blog !?

    I’m really not sure! Sorry!

Followers only apply to public blogs. They are people who follow you via a widget, or the follow button in the Reader or admin bar. Followers don’t need you permission to see your blog and they don’t need to have a WordPress.com account to follow your blog.

Viewers apply only to private blogs. They can only see your blog at your invitation and they must have their own WordPress.com accounts to follow your blog as viewers. Viewers don’t appear under your follower stats, but under Settings ->Reading in the dashboard.

See your other thread re your self-invite. I explained what happened there in that thread.

    Welcome to WordPress.com :)

I want to ask that you please not post links to your own blog in the forum. The forum is very strictly for technical support only, and blog promotion could get you flagged as a spammer.

The best place to promote your blog and connect with and get feedback from other bloggers is The Community Pool that publishes every Monday on the staff blog, The Daily Post. You can check it out here: https://dailypost.wordpress.com/category/community-pool/

    Hi everyone,

If someone has accepted a viewer invitation from a private blog and is also following that private blog, then if that person “unfollows” that blog, will that person remain capable of viewing that blog?

  • @perseshow
You cannot follow a private blog in the way you can follow a public one. You can only follow a private blog if the owner invites you as a viewer. Once you accept their invitation to view their site, their site will appear in the Blogs I Follow section of your Reader. Unfollowing, then, is removing yourself as a viewer, as I understand it (I’ve not actually tried this myself, but it’s my assumption based on how I know following works and what I can glean from the support docs).

Also keep in mind that the owner of a private blog can remove viewers, while the owner of a public blog cannot remove followers. And if you follow a public blog and it’s then set to private, you won’t be able to see it anymore unless the owner invites you as a viewer as well.

That’s pretty much what I thought. I’ve been following a previously positive blogger whose post output is taking a turn for the negative, and just recently I decided I don’t need to read that stuff, so I unfollowed. The thing is, the blog is private. I have been invited to view and accepted that invitation. The only thing I consciously changed was clicking the button to unfollow. Then I opened up the blog in a new tab, just as an experiment, and the privacy settings didn’t block me. I was wondering if it just takes time for the settings to kick in or something? Because since I unfollowed, my inbox has been refreshingly quiet, so I’m pretty sure unfollowing worked.

  • Try clearing your browser cache and cookies and see if you still have access then.

Otherwise, maybe unfollowing only removes the subscription from your end while access can only be revoked by the owner. It doesn’t make sense to me that it’d work that way, but you never know. I can tag this for staff if you want a more definitive answer?

Thank you, but that’s not necessary. I have no wish to continue to read the blog in question; as such there is no need to prepare for the event of privacy settings blocking my access. I just thought the knowledge would be useful, since the situation brought it to my attention. Thanks for taking the time!

  • As long as you’re happy. You’re very welcome :)
