What is the easiest way to remove unused CSS?

  • Unknown's avatar

I was reviewing my pagespeed insights score and finding it is really bad and so was going to start with the CSS area as that is where it seemed to be the worst. It is causing render blocking causing a 1.84s slow down as well as there seems to be a lot of unused CSS causing 1.2s slow down.

I found a few articles on how to improve it but it would appear those won’t work out of the box with me using WordPress.com which I have been using ever since Windows Live Spaces closed and I migrated here.

Do you have any suggestions/recommendations on the best way to move forward on making my site better?

    Thanks,
    Phil

  • Hi Phil,

Is your site loading slowly? If not, there’s nothing you need to fix. It loads within a couple of seconds for me, so I don’t see anything wrong on my end.

It’s important to understand that just because a tool like Pagespeed Insights says there’s issues on your site, it doesn’t mean something is actually wrong. Tools like that are helpful to diagnose the cause when you do experience loading issues on a site, but at the end of the day all that tool does is check your site against a set of arbitrary rules.

It also doesn’t take into account the specific platform you’re on. Removing the CSS, for example, would break your site – it’s not unnecessary as that tool claims, but it doesn’t know that because it doesn’t know how our system is designed to work.

You can find more details on this, along with some tips on what you can do to optimize your content to ensure the fastest possible load time, here:

Thank you for that insight and input. I recently changed my theme too in order to see if it might help with the results. :) You may have tested it on that. I appreciate the support link too as I will take time to check it out. Thanks again and Have a GREAT day.
