Does anyone know what the proper procedure is to add blogs to the blogroll? I’m not talking technically. I’m talking spiritually. Is it mostly contact someone and ay “add me and I will add you” kind of thing or does it run deeper. I just want to know if there is somekind of proper protocol. Thanks!

    Here are the facts:
    (1) You can link to any blog you choose in your blogroll (Links).
    (2) It’s customary to link to the leading blogs or other blog that you regularly read.
    (3) Mile long blogrolls containing both one way links to blogs with unrelated content and reciprocal links to non-related sites have less value and less authority than they previously had and can actually harm your blog’s ranking. Google is looking for is natural linking. Consequently, acquiring lengthy Blogrolls by means of link exchanges simply does not work any more.

Simply stated reciprocal links are based on an agreement by two sites (two way) to link to each other. Reciprocal linking is often used by small sites as a way to increase Web site traffic and link popularity. However, if you plan to enter such arrangements then it’s important to understand the implications and the realities.Search engines do not give much importance to unrelated (two-way) or reciprocal links and search engines will assume that unrelated reciprocal links are solicited links.

Quality reciprocal link exchanges in and of themselves are not a bad thing, but most reciprocal link offers are of low quality. If too many of your links are of low quality it may make it harder for your blog to rank for relevant queries, and some search engines may look at inbound link and outbound link ratios as well as link quality when determining how natural a site’s link profile is.

    (4) Links reflect relationships. In my blogroll (Links) link only to blogs that are related to my own blogs and that I regularly read.
    (5) In my posts I know that links to your sources are important for at least four reasons: Verifiability, Acknowledgment, Examples, and Context. Therefore, I link to the most authoritative references I can locate.

Hey timethief I really appreciate your detailed answer. I actually stumbled upon your blog yesterday when I was looking for ways to promote my blog! I remember your Avatar. I really appreciate it and I was thinking that I would only blogroll blogs that I read or had certain content that coincided with my site. Is it stupid to link someone who doesn’t link to me? Maybe if you get a chance you can click my site and see if i’m in the ballpark or off base. I actually favorited your site but instead I will subscribe I would love to eventually make a living off blogging but I know I have a long way to go.One more thing I know your not the help department. Last night I opened a blogger account and got the 56rebels address same as wordpress. I exported my wordpress to blogger with no problems. Is there a way I can write a blog post and have it sent to both wordpress and blogger? Thanks timethief! I will subscribe to you!

… I was thinking that I would only blogroll blogs that I read or had certain content that coincided with my site.”

Having a short blogroll wherein you link only to the most authoritative blogs in your niche makes perfect sense and as I wrote above it’s referred to as a natural linking pattern. As you are a new blogger you will not have trouble getting your head around this. You don’t have any habits to break. Your blogroll links are not written in stone. You may discover other blogs with better or more relevant content, or some blogs you have linked to may become neglected or abandoned. So we are talking about a dynamic process here – not a long term contract scenario.

Is it stupid to link someone who doesn’t link to me?

Not at all. I don’t expect the leading bloggers in my niche to link to my blog and you shouldn’t expect that either. Ther’es very little value in reciprocal link exchanges as I have explained above so don’t get into them.

There’s far more value in composing and publishing posts wherein you have linked to other bloggers’ relevant posts that there is in reciprocal blogroll links. When you link to other relevant posts in post of your own it’s called backlinking. It creates a one-way non-reciprocal link and that’s exactly what every blog needs lots of.

A last word here. Many bloggers link to their own blogs to their favorite blogging tips blogs and Google considers that to be a natural linking pattern. After all most bloggers are in completely different niches than those they get blogging help from. They do not publish posts backlinking to blogging tips posts because they are not relevant to the subject matter in their own blogs, so placing such a blog on your blogroll makes sense.

    WHOA! Bad plan!

Search engines are aimed at providing the most relevant search results. How can they do that if the blogopshere is full of duplicate content blogs? They can’t. Those who are polluting the blogosphere and diluting the relevancy of search results can be penalized by Google as well they ought to be. Make sure you content in both blogs is original and unique if you don’t want your blogs to suffer duplicate content penalties because this practice used to be a common one and is now on the hit list.
