what is the right way to change or delete old tags ?
if i delete old tag – the results in search engines leads to 404 page. that is not so healthy in matters of seo.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @oritsh – Is this for your above site at oritsha.com? If so, self-hosted WP sites have more options for handling such cases that are not available to users here on WordPressdotcom sites.
If you need help with your new WP site (congrats on the move!) you’ll want to post at https://wordpress.org/support and if you don’t have a username account on ORG, you can register one on that page.
If this is for a WordPressdotcom site, please let us know the URL.
Good luck and best wishes.

Thank you justjennifer (:
it was my mistake … the sites i’m talking about is wp.co sites, not the site oritsha.com -
Hi again, Thanks for clarifying.
My thought is that if you rename a tag or category, a redirect will be created, but let me tag this for Staff for confirmation.
-
-
Hi –
A redirect would not be created in this situation. If that is something you are interested in then the business upgrade would be required to make it happen.
-
Hi lizkarkoski
you mean that any change of the tags – change or delete, there is no way to prevent the landing in 404 pages ? -
oritsh – I don’t think so. Do you have an example on your site that I can reference to be sure? I’ll ask another co worker for confirmation as well.
-
Thanks @lizkarkoski- I had believed that a redirect would happen if tags and/or categories were renamed or converted via the tag/category converter tools. Following.
@oritsha- Did you delete those tags or rename them to something else?
-
Good morning justjennifer (:
i saw the option of category converter tools. i didn’t use it yet. it is good also for tags ?
the examples i have – one i deleted, one i corrected spelling (=change). other… i don’t remmber -
If there is no link on the site to the tag page google will just drop the page from their index, if there is a link to the page on the site you will have a broken link and a 404 page

Hello –
There are no redirects created. It hasn’t been long enough for Google to pick up the change and remove the old one/add new one. There isn’t anything else that I can do to help that process along.
-
do you mean that Google will fix it after a while and it will no longer come to error (404) pages ?
and if so – how long it can take ? -
Hello again, apologies for my misunderstanding of the issue @oritsha.
As staff-zinnia said, WordPressdotcom doesn’t have any control over the frequency with which search engines crawl and reindex our sites.
When you make changes to a WordPressdotcom site, the XML sitemap is also updated. If you have Google Search Console enabled for those sites, under the heading of “it couldn’t hurt”, you could resubmit the XML sitemap in the control panel there. More about sitemaps here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/#xml-sitemaps-for-search-engines
Best wishes.

Thank you justjennifer
i ask lizkarkoski about google because i asumed she know how it works, not because wp.com have control over the frequency with which search engines crawl and reindex our sites.
I have Google Search Console for those sites. I don’t remmber i saw any “it couldn’t hurt” heading .
The sitemap processed date is of today. and there is still 404 pages on the resultes. did i miss something ? -
@oritsha –
I have Google Search Console for those sites. I don’t remmber i saw any “it couldn’t hurt” heading .
Sorry, apparently I needed to be more literal in my earlier reply to you. :)
In the Search Console under Crawl there is a Sitemaps section. On that page in the upper right corner there is a button Add/Test SiteMap.
You can also see in your Search Console where your 404’s are linked from on your site. Under Crawl>Crawl Errors>Not Found, click each URL listed there and then on the “Linked From” tab in the window that opens.
If you need more help in working with the Search Console, there is a Help button on each page there.
do you mean that Google will fix it after a while and it will no longer come to error (404) pages ?
and if so – how long it can take ?From other forum discussions, it appears it can take 4-6 weeks for search engines to recrawl and update search returns for your site. If it goes beyond that, it would be worthwhile checking Google’s help pages for solutions.

Thank you justjennifer
I tested the sitemap – nothing new. the same errors is there.
i know how to use the “not found” 404 errors. that is how i know about all this errors. The errors still there…
For some errors is already passed much more than than 4-6 weeks . The errors still there …
