What is the Slug field for at the bottom of the edit page screen?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

The post slug is the part of the URL after the date in a post’s URL. When the default post slug is created, all letters will be converted to lowercase, spaces will be exchanged with dashes, and any special characters will be removed.

You can modify the post slug by clicking the Edit button next to it. When you’re finished editing, click OK. After you are done making your changes don’t forget to click the Update button to update the post and save these changes.

This is especially handy if, for example, your page title is very long, but you would like a URL that people can remember more easily.

If your language uses a non-western character set, long post titles can break post slugs. To fix that, shorten the post slug to a single word.

Keep in mind that only the post slug can be changed. You cannot change any other part of the url such as removing the date.

I pulled this info from this page:

Does this answer your question, or are you asking about something else entirely?

    Cheers!

Yes, I believe so. As I understand it, the Slug is the extended part of a URL that is unique to each tab/page and is what displays in the web address/browser bar to show the reader where they are at inside a website.

Question: I sent a hyperlink out in a marketing piece that – I just noticed – includes the Slug from the former title of a tab on my page. I would like to update that Slug to display the newer title. If I do this in the middle of my marketing campaign, will such an action mess up the hyperlinks out there that contain the old Slug?

    Thanks!

  • Yes – you will want to leave that slug as-is if it’s going out on printed materials, otherwise it will be broken.

If, however, the old slug doesn’t properly redirect (you can test it by typing it into the URL bar at the top of the screen) to the page you want it to, you WILL want to change it on those materials (you can test the new slug URL to make sure it works first in the same way).

You can post both URLs here for me to look at, too, if you like :)

I think this is good. It is not a significant change in the tab title. We will just wait for the campaign to end before changing the Slug. Thanks for your help.
