What is the TTL on the DNS for the wordpress.com server?

Just curious for when changing domains. Couldn’t find the information anywhere.

Is it an hour or longer? It would be nice if that information could be found somewhere. This in case a move has to be rolled back for example. So, the blog won’t be stuck on ‘private blog’ for example, for an unknown time, because of an unexpected error.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Changing https://ecodelphinus.wordpress.com/ from Private to Public is a minute or less – getting search engines to index a site that has been changed from Private to Public can take several weeks for search engines to learn the blog is public

Yes, the problem is when changing from yourdomain.com (that is hosted elsewhere), and yourblog.wordpress.com.

Have had to do this several times now, and it is annoying that a blog becomes unreachable, in case of an error.

The reason the blog is set to private is because otherwise search engines will spider, and mess up the urls. Causing even more work and stress.

    Grrrr….

To avoid such problems in the future it would be nice to know the TTL, so I can take it into the planning. The WordPress backend, while nice, is simplified, so I can’t get to DNS settings. So, Yeah. Fun times.

Cup of hot chocolate? :-) Going to be here a while I feel.

If you are asking about domain mapping and changing name servers – that can take 24 to 72 hours for changes to reach the far corners of the internet and you will be the last one to see the changes due to local caching issues

When changing settings it will take time for search engines to learn the new URL or the fact that a blog is now Public and that they can crawl a site

Appreciate you thinking along, don’t get me wrong, but your posts aren’t helping me further.

The local caching can be cleared. Interested in knowing the specific TTL on the server e.g. 1 hour or 1 day, not the general information, which I know.

As a feature it would be nice to put a technical maintenance or under construction notice up during the switch time.

I’m completely locked out of the DNS settings on the WordPress side of things at the moment, and don’t know how long the site will be down. (See for more info: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/multiple-upgrades-confliction-with-each-other)

It makes simple moves such an adventure, not to mention the economic loss, for the down time. Hence the wish to see it improved.

The problem you are probably seeing is the fact that not all the internet has caught up to your changes – the changes on the servers here for domain mapping is very quick – the issue is the caching around the internet and possibly your local ISP – no real way around the issue the changes just need to be waited out –

and you will be the last one to see the changes due to local caching issues

When somebody knows the specific answer please reply.

    Thank you.

You have been given the correct answer – I have been helping people with domain mapping issues here for several years – many times I can access a site in 3 or 4 hours just fine that has had the mapping changed- but the blog owner is doing what you are doing showing up at 48 hours and whining about the changes not working – takes time for the internet to update – pure and simple and there is not an answer like 27 minutes or what ever

Will you please stop interrupting this issue, and insulting users.
