What is this “Who Is” I keep on hearing about?

How is someone listed on it? Am I listed on it? I’ve never given my personal information away online. Please help.

try to goto http://www.whois.net and enter your domain name.

and see who is the domain owner and if his address is exposed on that page ?

    Thanks

You an also check DNS Stuff.

You may not have given any info but other people or services may have. Nothing is truely “private” any more.

You can pay extra to some domain registrars and get a private listing, where the registrar itself is listed on the whois instead of you. But you still have to give personal details in order to register a domain.

Of course if you ever get into a fight over a domain, not having your info listed in your record doesn’t help….

It’s also techinally against the RFCs that cover domain registration. (I don’t feel like going to look them up but they’re out there.)

Why is this allowed? It’s so dangerous for women who have their own sites. I’ve also had people wish me bodily harm. And no I’m not joking. Will my complete profile show only if I buy a domain name? Like if I had my own .com? There goes any chance of me paying for my site now. Screw the government!

I guess you can ask the host to keep the info anonymous. Private listing I meant.

    Geeesh.. what a scardy cat!

And BTW it’s not the “government” that requires it.

Dude, you REALLY have to calm down a bit. It’s too dangerous for women to have their own site? The government is after you? What are you on?

If what you’re doing is earning you threats of bodily harm, maybe you should consider doing something else. But seriously, calm down with the paranoia.

You might still have to give personal details in order to register a domain.

But I have been spammed by companies that hide behind a free throwaway email address like Yahoo and Hotmail.

And from the poor, no and slow response I guess Yahoo and Hotmail are not interested indoing anything about spam.
