what is WordPressFBJL3?

Facebook is telling me that an app called WordPressFBJL3 is an active app or website for my Facebook account, along with WordPress. I understand the connection with WordPress, since I have my blog post publication set up to automatically push a notice to my Facebook feed. I want to know what WordPressFBJL3 is so I know whether I actually want to keep it active or whether I want to remove it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • This sounds like an app created in Facebook for the purpose of logging in to a WordPress.org type site. The WordPress.com Facebook app just has the title “WordPress” and nothing more. Open your Facebook application settings and edit that app. You should see the “App Terms · App Privacy Policy” links that go to where the app relates to. If it’s not to a WordPress.com ot Automattic URL, the app in question isn’t for WordPress.com

Remember that sites outside of WordPress.com use the WordPress software. https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I can’t find any links that “go to where the app relates to”. And in the FB apps list, the logo is NOT even similar to either the WordPress logo or the Facebook logo. This is part of what bothers me. My “user ID” for this App is a 15-digit numerical string which I certainly did not select. I think it’s fishy but if I actually need it for some reason I shouldn’t remove it.

I just got a message (FB is rolling this out to all users gradually) with info about how to see which apps I am supposedly using on FB and how to control what information they have access to. So I really want to figure out whether this is friend or foe.

I tried to include a .png file of the logo but this message box apparently doesn’t accept that type of file.

  • If it’s something like an atom, that’s the generic app logo that means they didn’t select an image for the app. If it’s something else, it’s the icon for the site it relates to. It’s not related to WordPress.com, I can 99.9% tell you. The WordPress.com application has the WordPress.com logo. This is going to be a site you logged into with your Facebook information that happens to run the WordPress software.

I know it is not actually WordPress.com; the mis-capitalized name and generic logo are clear indications. I am trying to figure out whether it is any good (or bad) to me. I did not knowingly log into another site (especially one that is so stealth that it uses a misleading site name and a generic logo) with my Facebook info — in fact, I avoid logging into sites using FB, I just go there directly if I want to go there.

I am tagging wpcomhelp to see if anyone on staff has any additional input. Thanks.

  • WordPress.com staff will have input on things related to WordPress.com, but not to this in general. If you don’t know what it is, the safest thing is to remove it. As someone who has created Facebook apps for the purposes of site logins on WordPress(.org) powered sites, the site owner likely just thought up a random name on the spot that seemed relevant. I try to use my site name; the JL3 may be an indicator of their site name or address.

To call staff support, you’ll want to tag the post with modlook. I’m having trouble adding tags since the forums conversion, so please do add that if you’d like staff input on this issue. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question?

Hope you find the answers you need!

  • Hi there,

I suggest removing this app from Facebook and then check if Publicize still works. If the connection to Facebook is removed then you can add it back.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. I’m happy to help.

I removed the questionable app just before I published a post, and it posted to FB as usual. But I was chicken to click on “remove any posts that this app made to your timeline” (or similar). There was a pseudo-link to contact the developer to have them remove any data collected and saved about my friends — sure enough, the link didn’t do anything or go anywhere. So I hope the app is well and truly gone and that no one has collected and saved personal info about my friends….

  • I tested your connection to Facebook and it is still working without issues. This means that the other connection was not from WordPress.com and you did well removing it.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. I’m happy to help.
