What maximum length for a wordpress.com blog post/article?

My very long post –currently over 117,000 words, but the file-size on my hard disk (which I edit/review on my local computer before copying/pasting/overwriting the WordPress-hosted article) is 880,398 characters– updates kind-of slowly. If there is a maximum post length, perhaps I should learn about it before I break something, as I can’t promise that post won’t get even longer in the future. The post was deliberately created to get longer!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello! I don’t believe there are any limitations as far as characters go for a post. But you might start to see slower than usual load times due to the size if it gets too large. If that’s the case you can try to splitting them up into smaller posts or use pagination. Information on pagination:

I can understand that the large size could quite reasonably cause a slowdown in WordPress processing the file. I just wanted to be sure that was the only problem to expect. If you don’t truly positively know that the file size is effectively unlimited, then I can wait for another reply. (If the limit was, say, 10 Gigabytes, then simply due to the time it takes to type that much, the length would be “effectively” unlimited, since nobody would live that long. :)

While you might be able to get that word count into a single Post – I question the readability of it – it would be very long and would turn me off, since I doubt I could read the whole thing in one sitting – then coming back later and finding where I left off would be a real problem for me

I have flagged this for the staff, but a large Post like that seems to me would choke some browsers and lead to bad load times which defeats getting your Post read

There are many web pages out there associated with image files with larger file-sizes than the text of that existing blog-post (and by now lots of people are used to slower-than-optimum page-load times). Images, however, are generally stored on a system separately from text. So my question about a maximum length of possible text remains appropriate. I’m not worried about slow-ish updates and page-loads; I just don’t want to cause the WordPress host system to choke/crash because of a too-big text file.

  • In a general sense, there is no limit.

However, at extremely large sizes, things can start to act wonky. Shortcodes for example. I will say that I have yet to personally see a post of a size where this was happening.
