What on Earth is the "$80.00 Late Renewal" fee for!!!??!

  I went to renew one of the many domains that I have registered and mapped through WordPress today, and I was informed that the renewal would be NINETY EIGHT DOLLARS. This is after the previous screen had informed me that it would be $18.

  When I started reading further, I noticed that there is an $80 “Late Renewal” fee on the invoice. I registered this blog two years ago about this time (near my son’s birthday), and today, on his 2nd birthday, I went to renew it as I first noticed it had expired. With my wallet open on my desk, I logged in and clicked through to the renewal page, only to find that the fee was extortive.

  Why is this fee being charged? What justification could there possibly be?

  At this point, I want to know when my domain name will be released so that I can register it elsewhere because this is abusive and unnecessary.

  Additionally, the billing is listed as “recurring” on my last renewal. Why would the domain expire if I am set up for recurring billing, and if it did, why would there be an exorbitant fee to renew it?

  Has anyone else had this issue?
