what plugin to stop hackers/spammers?

So I disabled my Stop Spammers plugin as it was causing error issues on checking out and keeps giving me “error, please try again later” or somehow like that however there is an issue if I deactivate this plugin.
Issue with having Stop Spammers de-activeated:When we had the free programs open we had alot of hackers creating dummy accounts (hence the stop spammers plugin). I’m going to be creating free programs and a free level membership, so we will need something to protect the site from this.
→ Action to take: Can anyone provide an alternate suggestion of plugins that works like Stop Spammers but at the same time doesnt give any errors? that will allow clients and students to easily purchase and access their programs without leaving the doors open for spammers and hackers to bombard the site when we re-open the free programs?
