What should I do about threatening comments on my blog?

Someone posted a comment on my blog which I view as an implicit threat, suggesting he would use information I posted to stalk me. I am unsure what to do about this situation. It is unclear whether the comment was someone’s idea of a joke, or whether it is serious, but I must confess to being rather scared by it. How should I proceed?

Quite frankly, report it to law enforcement. They’re always happier to proceed when an explicit, rather than implicit, threat has been received, but there is no harm in alerting them to this. If he then takes steps to harrass and stalk you online, you have already opened a file on him with the cops, who will take everything he does from then on more seriously.
If that seems like going too far, why don’t you post that you were advised to go to law enforcement, but thought that maybe his sense of humour included implicit threats “hyuk hyuk” and that you’re happy to school him otherwise. I’ve dealt with trolls like these for years, and generally they only want to cow you, they don’t ACTUALLY want to be held accountable.

Raincoaster’s advice is good. If the commenter is a WordPress user it is also worth reporting them to the staff.

If they have a WorPress blog then use the Abuse reporting page:
http://en.wordpress.com/abuse/
Put their blog URL, select “This content is abusive” then in the second page describe the implicit threat and link to your comments. If you have unapproved the comment or it is in your deleted folder tell staff this too.

Thank you. The URL is wordpress but anonymous. ‘(email visible only to moderators and staff)’. Bit weird. Not sure this guy is actually a blogger.
