What sort of support is given when moving to wordpress.org?

  • Unknown's avatar

Someone just told me I can copy and paste my current CSS into the .org site if I’m using a jet pack plugin. Is that true?? And it should work the same so the changes I made to the twenty fourteen theme will show up?

Thanks! Trying to figure it all out!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey!

Even without Jetpack, you can adjust your CSS!

    You can try to copy/paste.

The only issue is sometimes there are slight differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org themes. Even if it’s the same theme.

So, it might not be seamless, but then again, it might work like a dream.

If I were you, that would be the first thing I’d try!

Let me know if it works!

I actually did try that when I first tried the transfer myself…I put the copied CSS on the style sheet under editor…it did transfer some stuff but not all…boo.

    Hiya,

That doesn’t surprise me entirely. Just because of the differences in the WordPress.com/WordPress.org themes.

If you’re feeling industrious, I’d suggest taking specific CSS issues to the WordPress.org forum.

If it get overwhelming, you might have someone else put in the work for you…but I’m guessing with the help of the community, you’ll have no trouble.

This post about CSS at WordPress.com will also help (even with WordPress.org):

Hope you have a terrific day!

When you get a chance, will you do that export thing for me? I’m looking at what I was able to get imported on my own, (after importing the file I exported 7 times!) and it looks like my blog posts aren’t looking right and half of my pictures are just question marks…Their tech team said to export directly into wordpress.org but I don’t know how to do that…is that possible?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey there!

I can definitely do the export!

I’m going to have you take a look at something first, however.

    https://veggiesdontbite.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php?mode=list&orderby=parent&order=asc

In the column, Uploaded To, if you see Unattached, can you please attach those images to a page or post? Just click Attach and assign it to the correct post or page.

Unattached images will appear “broken” if they’re not attached before the export/import.

Looking forward to hearing from you once that’s done, and I’ll run the export and send you the file! Thanks very much.

Interesting…that was probably part of the problem. Although I still had blog posts that weren’t showing up right and many more pictures than that that weren’t showing right either…

I actually talked to someone today that is going to take care of the whole transfer for me and deal with all those little things. He said he will let me know if these images pose an issue…I’ll let you know if he can’t do it and I attempt it again myself! Thank you!!

Great! Let us know if you have any trouble moving the site.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there! So my content is transferred over and I’m just working out a few kinks and stuff with the team over at Bluehost…

How do I get all my subscribers, likes, stats to move over to the new site? I do have jetpack installed. I haven’t yet directed over there, I’m waiting until all is completely done so I don’t affect my current followers looking at my site.

  • Unknown's avatar

I can transfer your subscribers and stats over to your self-hosted site whenever you give me the green light! WordPress.com Likes (shown at the bottom here: http://d.pr/i/GDjM) will not transfer over.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok…does my site need to be up and active on the self hosted side for you to transfer all that over?? I’m still on a temp url until I direct the servers over there but was going to wait to do that until I have figured out all the kinks.

  • Unknown's avatar

We’ll want to have the correct domain up and active first. As soon as you get the domain up and running on the self-hosted site (off the temp URL), let me know. I’ll transfer the data as soon as possible.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, so once I get all the kinks worked out and transfer the name servers over there right? SO meaning that when you go to my blog you are going to the new self hosted site versus the wordpress.com hosted site…

  • Unknown's avatar

Right – once you have all of your content transferred over to your self-hosted site and your design is setup how you would like it to look, you’ll need to change the name servers to point to your Bluehost hosting. You will need to do that where you registered the domain (looks like Fast Domains).

Once you’ve done that, reply back here. I can help you transfer all of the subscribers and stats. We can also make sure the upgrades on your account are taken care of (no need to pay for ones you aren’t using!).

Hi there, quick question…will all my email and wordpress.com followers transfer over?? And my stats from when I started?

Still working on my site and not ready yet but just checking. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Yep! Both your WordPress.com and email followers will transfer over along with all of your stats. The only consideration is that WordPress.com followers (those that manage their subscriptions through WordPress.com) will only receive new posts through their Reader from your new site. If they previously set up their subscription through WordPress.com to receive emails, they will not receive emails once we move them to your self-hosted site.

You may want to post a notice on your WordPress.com site before we move your subscribers indicating that you’re moving to a self-hosted site and their subscriptions are coming with you. However, if they’re a WordPress.com user, they’ll likely want to subscribe via email on your self-hosted site to continue getting emails. Then, on your self-hosted site, you can put a Subscription Widget (comes with Jetpack) on your sidebar.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, go it. I have a notice up about the changeover but I will adjust it to include this info…so I should say to resubscribe with email? Can they do this now or should they wait until I move over the site?

Another question, I already have the jetpack subscription widget active on my self hosted site, but if I switch over and I use an email subscriber plug in like Awebar will I lose everything or will my subscribers still stay the same? I was thinking of using this plug in because others have told me it looks a little more professional and you can customize the emails to match your blog theme, etc. Is it best to get that installed and working before you do the move over??

    Thanks again!

You’ll want to wait until we switch the domain over (you don’t want to point them to a temp URL).

You will just have two different pools of subscribers. You’ll have your Jetpack subscribers and then those that have signed up through AWeber. You probably want to only have one option for users (otherwise it gets confusion). Two options:

    1. Remove the Jetpack widget. All future subscribers will sign-up through AWeber. Existing Jetpack subscribers will continue to receive email updates. WordPress.com users that don’t subscribe through AWeber will receive Reader updates.

    2. Remove AWeber widget and use Jetpack going forward.

Is it best to get that installed and working before you do the move over?

If you’re going to setup AWeber, I would get the basics (signup for an account, etc) setup beforehand. Then, when you switch over the domain, you’re ready to go!

  • Unknown's avatar

So put up a message now, but tell them not to subscribe via email until my site transfer is done??

I definitely only will use one subscription option, thinking Awebar…so will the people that subscribed with jetpack still get the WordPress email or will they all get the newer Awebar email when I post something new?

I will get set up with Awebar and install it before I go live for sure…along with all the other plugins I want.

I am almost done with the migration piece and then I am going to install a new theme and do a little redesign on my own, then install all the plug ins I want, then point over the name servers once it all looks good, and then get in touch to have you transfer stats and subscribers over! Sound ok?

  • Unknown's avatar

So put up a message now, but tell them not to subscribe via email until my site transfer is done??

    I’d recommend the following steps:

    1. When you’re ready to point the domain to your self-hosted site, post to your WordPress.com site or update the message regarding the transfer.
    2. Change the name servers on your domain to point to your self-hosted site. This way, anyone that reads the message and visits your site will be taken to your self-hosted site. Put your AWeber sign-up form on your sidebar at this time.
    3. Reply back here once you’ve changed the domain to point to your self-hosted site. I’ll move your subscribers and stats

I definitely only will use one subscription option, thinking Awebar…so will the people that subscribed with jetpack still get the WordPress email or will they all get the newer Awebar email when I post something new?

You can think of them as two separately lists.

Everyone that is signed up to follow your site through Jetpack will automatically receive a notice when you post something new to your site. That notice will look like the notices followers receive now when you post to your WordPress.com site.

Everyone that signs up through AWeber will only be notified when you send something through AWeber. They will not be notified automatically when you post something new unless you set that up through AWeber (you can setup AWeber to automatically send out an email when an RSS feed is updated).

The two lists will be completely separate. AWeber signups will not see your Jetpack notifications, and Jetpack subscribers will not see your AWeber emails.
