What the bleep is a permalink?!
-
I can see it under the title window in edit mode of a post
Eg
Permalink: http://bizlinks.wordpress.com/2008/05/06/can-you-imagin…e-time-for-alland it has an /edit link!
Unless i know what it is how am i to edit it?!
Anyone?
permalink super geeks?!I have done a search and it is assumed all know what a permalink is!
-
Permalink is the permanent web address of your blog post. Yes, you can now edit it; you didn’t used to be able to. I don’t bother, but if for instance you realize you’ve misspelled something in your title and now it’s part of your permalink, you can change it, but only the part at the end, after the date; the part that comes from the title.
-
Permalink is just the url for that particular post only (as opposed to a page full of posts) and clicking edit gives you the ability to edit that post.
-
thanx… rain c and morris
i can only see the permalink whilst i am in edit mode, so i don’t understand why i would need to edit that posts url as i am editing the whole post! am there all ready.
do you mean i could put a different url so that when someone clicks the title to leave a comment they are so called re routed to another ‘place’? and not to the comment window?
yes? no? -
No.
You can edit it in case you make a mistake, like once I made a title “Natalie Portman is a Bigot” and right after I posted it I realized that I’d made a mistake and that’s not what she was at all, so then I could go in and edit the permalink so it didn’t say “natalie-portman-is-a-bigot” but rather something more useful and appropriate like “natalie-portman-is-not-a-bigot”.
-
ooooowah
so even though you changed the title the permalink didn’t change?
you have to change it manually to reflect the title correction
seems a tad antiquated don’t you think?
i dooo hope i’ve got it now!
yr a patient person – thanx -
You’re welcome. The reason they don’t make it easy to edit the permalink is, you might have gotten links to it in the meantime and if you change it you’ll break those links. It’s not something to do on a casual basis.
-
Plus may I add that the permalink is updated when you only save. So say you wrote “Natalie Portman is a bigot”, the permalink will be at that on your screen. But if you change your title to “Natalie Portman is not a bigot” before pressing “publish”, then the permalink will be correct on your blog. Or say you press “save” and it goes into your drafts: when you re-open your draft the permalink will have been updated too. But as raincoaster mentioned, once its out, you dont want to go and change your permalink often, cos you might have been linked to already and it just creates chaos.

oh kay!
i get it – at laaaaaaaaast
rather like not messing with the windows operating system files!Thanx one and all!
do you know how to remove/switch off/disengage a RSS feed?
I’m good at joining them with the orange button!
I don’t like the idea that in the background videos or mp3 files are being downloaded with out my knowing about it [eg bbc podcasts – they are big files and i have limited bandwidth per month – cost of adsl here is a rip off! TELKOM south africa is a monopoly and they make billions profit each yr – they are your worst nightmare to deal with – not my favourite monopoly!] -
If you’re hosting the files at WordPress.com you’re not getting charged for bandwidth. If you’re not hosting them here, host them at Google Pages, which is free as well.
-
hi raincoaster
your speak is too technical – sorry
when i’m on a site and i like the content
i click the rss feed thinking that i will get any updates or new posts/infois this not what the rss feed does?
how does one unsubscribe from it?
the bandwidth i’m talking of is my monthly charge for using the adsl internet connection – charged per gigabit of bandwidth – rather than dial up conneection
-
The RSS feed will send any updates to your RSS reader. If you open your RSS reader program, you should be able to delete feeds you don’t like there.
I thought you were talking about your own feed, and files that you paid to host.
-
my own feed?!
that sounds interesting
i’m sure you don’t have the time nor the energy to expand on that!can you suggest where to download a rss reader from?
cheers -
Google Reader gets high marks, or Bloglines.
And I don’t really know much about feeds, but I do know you already have one. It’s at http://bizlinks.wordpress.com/feed .
-
Firefox will read rss, I don’t think IE will. But Google reader will be viewable in any browser
-
thanx r & m
and
when would i click track back?
which is above the comment window [in unsleepable theme/design]
