Occasional ads have been placed on blog here since 2006 as a way to help pay for this service and keep it mostly free. Take a look at the bottom of the main features page: http://en.wordpress.com/features/ . Places like blogger don’t have to worry about paying for things like data centers, servers and bandwidth because they have a sugar daddy, Google and adding blogger to the Google server network doesn’t even make a blip in Google’s costs. WordPress does not have a sugar daddy.
There is a no-ads upgrade available for you to purchase: http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/ .

Hi. Before you consider Blogspot, I recommend you read this:

me too, what the heck?
small text ads maybe ok, but giant banners that don’t display correctly in my theme? this sucks

I haven’t seen any banners, perhaps you should contact staff directly at http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ .

@seamas – It looks like you are not hosted on WordPress.COM but have a site using the WordPress.ORG software – your version is 2.5.1 which has some major security issues. I am not familiar with your host but from the way your site is scrunched way over to one side I suspect that your host plan lets your host put adds on your site.

WordPress.ORG are the keepers of the software you are using: http://wordpress.org/support/
