What Theme was I using?

    Hello:
I have a backup from a site that I created about four years ago. I want to create a similar site with different content and for various reasons I don’t want to restore the backup. Where can I look in the backup to find out which Theme I was using on the old site. I’m sure that information is there somewhere.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That last comment (The blog I need help with …) was added without my permission. The blog that was listed is not the one I was referring to in the first part of the note. It’s a self-hosted web site using WordPress.

  • If you have a complete backup of an old self hosted site that has a zip of all the folders and a .sql, you can unzip the files and look in the folder where themes are stored. The structure is [root] > wp-content > themes > [the theme]. That theme name can be searched for to find the same one, if it available for WordPress.com hosting, here: https://wordpress.com/themes

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for the information. I ended up restoring the backup and then it was relatively easy to figure out which theme I had been using. Your information will be helpful in future situations.

It appears that I spoke a bit early. Your suggestion works if I only had one theme on the old site, but I typically try several different themes before I decide to use one of them. So that was the problem – which theme was I using from the several that I had in the themes folder.

It is very easy to determine this from a working site – just look at the page source and the theme is easily discerned from the tags in the early part of any page. It is much more difficult to figure out which theme was in use from the archived php source files.

Obviously, somewhere in the source files from a wordpress site – perhaps in the database – there must be a setting that shows the theme in use. That’s the information that I was looking for.

  • If you have a lot of themes and simply don’t remember, that is trickier. :) You’d have to get into the sql database you’d saved. It’s in the wp_options table as template and stylesheet.

Just in case anyone comes here with the same question I have figured it out and I am posting it here for anyone else who has the same issue.

The trick is to look at the database backup – which is typically stored in a text file consisting of the SQL required to restore the database. As darciemg suggests, you can load the sql into a text editor and look for “theme”. There will be lots of hits, but the theme that was in use will be fairly obvious from the first few references. Again as darciemg suggests, you can narrow it down if you look for “wp_options” first and then look for the word “theme”.
