I want to start with wordpress.com site and later host my own site.
I am looking for a list of themes that can be used with both wordpress.com and wordpress.org sites

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Themes licensed and coded to run on wordpress.com software cannot be exported and used on wordpress.ORG software installs. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Most of our free themes also have a version available for self-hosted WordPress sites. You can check if a theme has a version available for self-hosted sites by looking for the “download THEME NAME for your self-hosted WordPress site.” link at the bottom side bar on the individual theme page.

Here is a list to all the free themes:
    https://wordpress.com/themes/type/free/

Most Premium Themes also have a version for self-hosted sites. However, to use a theme on a self-hosted site you’ll need to repurchese the theme from the theme shop.

As timethief mentioned there may be some differences in the self-hosted version of the theme but these should be minor. One safe bet would be to use the default “twentyYEAR” themes.

While we are so pleased to have you here on WordPress.com I would recommend that if you are planning on move to a self-hosted site it may be easier to start there depending on your time-line for the move. This may save you some trouble down the road.

I was looking for a table/listing of free themes which are available on both wordpress.com and wordpress.org with out doing a search and figuring out which themes are common to both. Seems like a reasonable request.

    Hi burtcg,

Currently we do not have a table of free themes that work on both WordPress.com and WordPress.org sites. This is largely due to WordPress.com and WordPress.org projects being separate entities.

I would recommend any of the default WordPress themes, such as Twentyten — Twentyfifteen. If those themes don’t work for you, I’d encourage checking both theme directories to see if a theme is available for both WordPress installs.

Alternatively, you could check the theme’s page here on WordPress.com to see if there is a download link. Here is an example from : Gazette’s page here: https://wordpress.com/themes/gazette/
