I am receiving over 12,000 spams from a site called ‘looky’ daily. Askimet isn’t catching this. What to do?

I am receiving over 12,000 spam comments from a site called ‘looky’ daily. Askimet isn’t catching these. What to do? I try to delete them, but it’s only 20 at a time.

    Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the influx of spam! I just checked your site, and it looks like there’s an approved comment from “looky” on August 5. You can find that comment by going to the Comments page in your dashboard, clicking on “Approved” at the top of the page, and searching for “looky” in the search bar there.

Approving or unspamming a comment like that can confuse Akismet and let through other comments from the same commenter, so you’ll want to mark that comment as spam. That should help correct the problem.

If some of these comments still slip through the spam filter, you can add something identifying about these comments (like the commenter’s name or email address), to your comment blacklist. That will automatically send their comments to your spam folder.

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

    Thank you….I’ll do that.

You’re welcome, Jane. If there’s anything more I can do to help, just let me know.

Well….I am trying to delete the spam that is still around 5,880 pieces….I keep doing the routine to delete, but it isn’t working except at times in batches of 20. LOL!

Will try again later, but this is really annoying. I think spamming sites is the pits.

If it’s too much of a pain to delete the comments that are marked as spam, you don’t have to do it! They will be automatically deleted after 30 days. :)

Yahoo! That’s wonderful! And….I’m a bit worried that this ‘looky’ is a crook. He has mentioned in a few (that I read…..and deleted…) spams that ‘he is looking to grab other people’s writing and post them on his blog. (which he doesn’t have yet)….and is this Illegal, and a copyright infringement?”

    Well….yeah.

I’m a professional writer and have published 5 books with also works in international anthologies. I have had short stories and poems stolen before and either the website owners contacted me about this theft, or the website’s lawyers went to bat. Since ‘looky’ has already stated what he wants to do …..should I worry again?

    Thanks!
    Jane

    Hi Jane,

That sounds pretty nasty. :( I’d recommend looking at these two pages for advice about content theft:

There’s not much you can do preemptively, but you can arm yourself and watch out for stolen content in case you do need to take action. I hope this helps!

Thank you, Rachel. Though spammers seem to be just annoying, it also seems that the potential for much worse behavior is lurking in some spammers intentions.

I will look at those sites. The tragedy of content thieves is that they never, ever develop the joy of creating original products of work. They rob themselves as much as others. They aren’t critical thinkers of any water.

    Jane
