what to do when a person outside the wp community keeps on threatening me?

  • Unknown's avatar

What to do with threats concerning plagiarism. This is NOT about somebody accusing me of plagiarism, rather about somebody pestering me and now threatening me as ‘an accomplice’. The person accused of plagiarism has deleted his/her blog 6 weeks ago, but this person, the accuser, keeps sending me abusive comments and now started threatening me. The person bothering me is not a member of the wp community and uses a variety of IP and email addresses.

This is the message I received (the 7th one in two days by this person):
“You have an option: to publically condemn Tongue Sandwich and withdraw your earlier praise. Otherwise you count as an accomplice!”

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Keep your blogging cool.

Note that submitting unwelcome comments is not a criminal offense requiring policing of any kind.
    Read these please:

We cannot block or delete subscribers from public blogs. Everyone on the internet can view and follow any public blog. That is in fact what the public designation means.

You can change your blog visibility to “private” http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/ Please read this about public blogs that become private blogs > Blog Privacy and Subscribers > http://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/blog-privacy-and-subscribers/

Note that you have complete control over everything that’s posted to your blog via comment moderation
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation

You don’t have to post any comment on your blog. Delete troll posts http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/03/27/how-to-starve-a-troll/
and mark only spam as spam. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/01/24/mark-only-spam-as-spam/

You can use the comments blacklist to send the spam to the spam queue automatically. Enter their email address, their username, and if they included it, their website URL. That will automatically send them to moderation so that their comments do not appear on the blog.

Do note though that if they are determined, they can use a different email address or username to get around that. Also, do not put their IP address in the blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. Also, all they would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that.

One other thing I would suggest is to set your blog so that first time commenters are held in moderation till approved, then from that point forward they will not need approval. Settings > Discussion. The next step beyond that is to set it so that all comments are held in moderation until approved. That way you are in control, and they might just get tired and go elsewhere after a while.

Thank you for your comment, Timethief. I’m already moderating all comments to my site and blocking comments isn’t fruitful when the abusive person uses a different email address every time. I’ll consider moving to a private blog in future. Even though I don’t respond to abuse and spend as little time as possible in dealing with it, it has considerably diminished my pleasure in blogging.

Tell the fucker he is an accomplice to Hitler and Osama bin-Laden. If he asks why then just point out that he hasn’t publicly condemned them

I apologise for the bad language in the previous post – trolls who criticise you for not condemning everything under the sun really annoy me.

If someone is harassing you online to the point where it is interfering with your life, tell the police about it.

Thank you for your comments, Tandava. I actually thought that was rather funny. I’ve never had anything to do with a troll before, so I really didn’t know how to react at first. I feel a lot better now.

Thank you for your advice, Raincoaster. I’ll keep that in mind.

    One more supportive comment.

You control the comment box. You have the right to edit and delete any comment on your site. Use that right.

If they are taking illegal action against you, defamation, threats, get screenshots of the comments and document them just in case you need them in the future BEFORE you delete them.

WordPress.com abuse reports may also help you handle this.

There are trolls everywhere. That’s life. No different than jerks outside the virtual world. Take action now and protect yourself, but don’t let them change you or your site. That’s how they win. Don’t let them.

You are not alone! Be brave.

Thank you for your comment, Lorelle. I didn’t realise that it might be a good idea to keep copies of the comments.
The comments I received were intended to change my site. I’ll keep everything as it was. Thanks again for your suggestions.
